The world's first fast charging plaza for heavy construction equipment and electric trucks has been operational since April this year. WattHub is a development of construction combination Mekante Diek (Ploegam, Dura Vermeer and Van Oord) in cooperation with BetuweWind and initially intended for charging the electric construction equipment deployed on project Dijkversterking Tiel - Waardenburg. TSG Charge, specialist in e-Mobility solutions, has fully equipped the XL fast charging plaza.
TSG Charge designs, implements and maintains e-Mobility solutions in many industry segments. "It forms one of the eight pillars within our company with decades of knowledge and experience in the mobility sector," said Tommy van der Sluijs, EV business development manager at TSG. "With yet another business unit, we keep a very large part of the 4,000 gas stations in the Netherlands running, among other things."
TSG operates in more than 30 countries in Europe and Africa. "From our business unit TSG Charge, we have in-depth partnerships with suppliers of hardware and software for electric mobility. One important one is Kempower, which markets, installs and services its products through TSG Charge in many dozens of countries," Tommy clarified. "It was Kempower that got a call from Mekante Diek in 2022. They needed loaders to carry out the dike reinforcement between Tiel and Waardenburg emission-free. Not much later, we from TSG Charge sat down with Kempower, the building consortium and BetuweWind to discuss the plans."
TSG Charge builds loading docks nationwide, turnkey. "That's how we initially viewed this project as well," says Tommy. "While there was already a fairly concrete idea, we immediately saw room for improvement in terms of layout, orientation of parking bays and density of chargers, among other things. In doing so, we were able to achieve both a more efficient layout and cost savings on cabling. So we were able to clearly demonstrate our added value right from the start. Moreover, the beauty in this collaboration was that together with the construction consortium, we were able to carry it out completely in-house. We have all the expertise in-house, except civil engineering, and let Mekante Diek specialize in that."
The fast charging plaza has a total charging capacity of more than 4 MW, of which 3.6 MW is dynamically distributed among 36 charging points of up to 400 kW per point. "In addition, we developed and installed six Powerlock cabinets to charge mobile battery containers via quick connect couplers up to 400 Amps. Of course, we also installed all cabling from BetuweWind's medium voltage substation and built three transformer stations to convert all power from 10,000 volts to 400 volts. Finally, we also created and executed the lighting plan," Tommy lists TSG Charge's wide range of services. They will soon also provide service and maintenance for the world's first XL fast charging plaza.
