RiF010 is a water sports center in the middle of Rotterdam where people will soon be able to wave surf, bodyboard, kayak and even scuba dive.
To realize this, a surf pool will be made in the Steigersgracht closed off from the rest of the Rotte River and the water purified. The wave cellar will then contain an installation that will create artificial waves. It is expected that by the summer of 2024 at the latest, the Netherlands will have a richer surf spot.
Mobilis coated the large tub, which is the area between all the sheet pile walls, with a layer of underwater concrete. The pour for this weekend was 2,000 cubic meters. This is equivalent to 2 million gallons.
The concrete comes from the concrete plant Dyckerhoff Basal Betonmortel b.v. from Delft. It involves steel-fiber reinforced underwater concrete which, over a large part of the future surf pool, eliminates the need for a reinforced structural floor for the final phase. This saves in material use and time. It was a caravan of concrete trucks, a total of 200 concrete trucks came in and out.
In the area we have many different stakeholders, think residents, business owners, other construction projects, the market on the Binnenrotte, two school communities and a church. Each group has its own interests. In consultation with the municipality, we juxtaposed and weighed all interests as best we could. Therefore, we started on Friday afternoon, November 3, and continued uninterrupted until Sunday morning at 5 o'clock. After all, the process of pouring was not to be interrupted. This has everything to do with the curing of the concrete.
When the concrete is properly cured, we will begin pumping out the tub. Once all the water is pumped out and the tub (120 meters long and 22 meters wide) is sufficiently watertight, we will proceed with the structural work.
