Seminar on working on hinterland protection, port accessibility, nature compensation and energy

Future fascination on the construction and design of a multifunctional island and flood barrier on the Zeeland-Flemish coast in the mouth of the Westerschelde. The follow-up to the previously held World Water Works seminar at Antwerp Expo.

Current topics make up the program of this unique cross-border conference chaired by Prof. drs.ir. Han Vrijling such as:

  • The realization of a second North-South connection between Rotterdam and Calais, which will also constructively serve as a flood barrier to protect the hinterland. A second bank connection will eventually be necessary when the Westerschelde tunnel becomes toll-free.
  • Central to this shoreline connection is the idea of creating an island for the establishment of industry with on the sea side the coveted Westerschelde Container Terminal for storage and transshipment of the larger ships to inland shipping and road transport, among other things. This is to combat traffic congestion.
  • The dam will be equipped with a double lock complex in the context of free passage for coastal shipping and smaller ships to the various Westerschelde ports and hinterland, among others.
  • The island offers space for industries, especially heavier industry, and the establishment of, for example, one or more small nuclear power plants and alternative energy facilities.

This transition will free up space on the mainland for living, working and recreation. "Building with and for Nature.
