Sustainable emergency site for fire-damaged hardware store completed in no time

Several months ago, the wood storage of a hardware store in Baarn burned completely. After the last flames went out, immediate action was taken. Swiftly, an emergency site was created on an adjacent property, allowing the hardware store to resume normal operations barely 48 hours later.

The emergency site will be used as temporary storage for wood supplies and provide space for trucks to load and unload. The surface consists of about seven hundred concrete slabs, which were delivered and placed by Zwaagstra Beton shortly after the fire. "On Thursday morning, a few hours after the fire, we received a phone call asking if we could deliver seven hundred concrete slabs in Baarn," says Richard Zwaagstra, owner of Zwaagstra Beton in Hoogeveen. "We had to move quickly, but we always have a lot of concrete slabs in stock, have our own transport and lay the slabs ourselves. That offers a lot of possibilities."

A day later, Zwaagstra Concrete began laying the first slabs. Zwaagstra: "The supply of slabs went on all day. We laid them directly from the truck, so it went super fast. Moreover, that is the safest and most responsible way. That way you don't have to drag the heavy plates yourself. The next morning we laid the last few in place and the job was done." This allowed the hardware store to look ahead even before the weekend. "It's great that we were able to lend the hardware store a helping hand in this way."

Secondary raw materials

Zwaagstra Concrete's concrete slabs consist mostly of sustainable, secondary raw materials. The pounded slabs contain 100% ECO granulate and 50% ECO sand. "ECO raw materials are beautiful, high-quality products and are always available. Moreover, by reusing raw materials, less new sand and gravel needs to be extracted. An ultimate example of circular economy. In doing so, we contribute to a more sustainable world."
