Whisper-quiet hydraulics for monumental lock complex

By carrying out various renovation works, Molenmaker Techniek from Sneek contributed substantially to the major maintenance of the Groote Zeesluis lock in Muiden. Director/owner Otbert Molenmaker looks back on a special project with satisfaction.

Molenmaker Techniek designs, manufactures and maintains a variety of hydraulic systems. For offshore, shipping, industry, mechanical engineering and waterworks. The Muider project was a perfect fit for the company. "Commissioned by Waternet, we carried out various work on the lock complex's movement system," explains Molenmaker. "For example, 18 new door movement cylinders with one hydraulic aggregate each were installed and the lock gates were fitted with 36 brand new rinket slides. We also provided a new hydraulic aggregate with cylinder for the turning part of the bridge. We also equipped the bridge's set-up system with a new hydraulic aggregate. Furthermore, we performed several mechanical overhauls on the swing bridge and locks."

Challenges

Although Molenmaker Techniek mainly used standard components during the renovation, it was a remarkable job. "First of all, it was important to minimize the inconvenience to shipping traffic," says Molenmaker. "By carrying out the work in three phases, we succeeded admirably. One chute was operational each time. Nuisance limitation was also central during the bridge work. During two nighttime sessions, we also brought those to a successful conclusion."

The real challenge was in the fact that the bulk of the work had to be done from the water. "Space at the project site was quite limited," Molenmaker continues. "Added to the need to minimize inconvenience to shipping traffic, this resulted in this particular approach. On top of that, the new installations had to be built into relatively small technical rooms. It was really a matter of fitting and measuring. Within an excellent cooperation with EPC Group, responsible for the realization of the controls and the system implementation, we succeeded with flying colors."

Sound-friendly

Molenmaker Techniek's expertise not only provided the Groote Zeesluis with a range of optimally functioning hydraulic techniques. In accordance with Waternet's requirements, the hydraulics specialist also provided the lock complex with whisper-quiet generators. "The sea lock is located in a residential and hospitality area," says Molenmaker. "That fact required a noise-friendly solution. By using indoor gear pumps, low-speed electric motors and specific damping rings, among other things, we were able to get the noise level of the generators below 63 decibels. That is very unique."
