They work invisibly, but are indispensable. Whether locks, quay walls or bridges, Aquatech Diving is involved as a subcontractor in numerous civil engineering water works in the Netherlands. "We are the eyes and hands under water," says Steven Spanhaak, commercial director. "From our diving branch, we support main contractors and clients in inspections, repairs, renovations and new construction."
Aquatech Diving is part of the Aquatech Group, which consists of two divisions: Diving (civil) and Offshore (oil, gas and renewables). Whereas the Offshore branch focuses primarily on the international energy market, Diving is concerned with engineering structures in the Netherlands: bridges, dams, pumping stations, construction pits and parking garages. And therefore: underground infrastructure in and around the water.
A current example is the Amsterdam project Kade2020. Aquatech Diving is involved in the inspection and repair of the Leidsegracht and Grimburgwal. "We are doing the pre-inspections as well as supporting the placement of prefab quay elements. All for the preservation of the historic city appearance."
New construction projects often involve more than just inspection. For example, Aquatech Diving is collaborating in Zoutkamp on the foundation and construction of a new pumping station and a new lock. "There we are doing foundation work and later in the project we will perform specialized welding and construction work, both under and above water."
Aquatech Diving is also active in ports. During the refurbishment of seven ferry ports on the Friesian coast and Wadden Islands, the company installed cathodic protection on steel quays and sheet pile walls. "This is how you extend the life of existing infrastructure considerably, without drastic replacement."
On the Afsluitdijk, both at Den Oever and Kornwerderzand, Aquatech Diving is involved in various works. "Among other things, we have installed ICCP protection near the sluiceway and pump groups, we have been there to dry out the sluiceways for renovation, and we perform inspection work and repairs. We also assist contractors, or are the client's point of contact. In all cases, we are their eyes and hands underwater and make sure the right information comes to the surface."
What sets Aquatech apart? "We provide not only craftsmanship, but also service and solution-oriented thinking. Whether it concerns planned work or a
calamity. We offer 24/7 availability, switch quickly and arrange the entire process if required, from inspection to road closure or shipping escort." The down-to-earth northern mentality goes without saying. "Shoulder to shoulder and go."
