A multitude of state-of-the-art control techniques

Active within the industry, shipping and (wet) infrastructure Electronic Power Control (EPC) has proven itself for years as a true specialist around the design, renovation and realization of electrical control installations. This was also the case during the renovation of the Groote Zeesluis lock in Muiden, a special project in which the family business was involved from the very beginning...

Operations Director Andries de Rover, son of founder Dirk de Rover, is immensely proud of the workmanship delivered in the heart of Muiden. "At the end of 2018, we started the electrical renovation of the lock complex on behalf of Waternet. First of all, we provided the hardware and software engineering for the operation of the two lock gates, the sluice gate and the swing bridge. This also took into account any future remote object operation. Then we started building the necessary control cabinets in our workshop."

New control installation

EPC made a start on site conversion in spring 2019. This involved replacing the old control system in the technical room under the lockkeeper's house with an entirely new system. "The hydraulic swing bridge, both sluice gates and the lock chamber were equipped with separate controls," says De Rover. "In addition, several new lecterns have been installed to control both the swing bridge and both lock heads of the Vecht side lock gates, the lock heads on the IJmeer side and the toll valves and point gates of the sluice. We also installed a brand new public address system and replaced the cameras needed for safe passage of shipping traffic."

Great collaboration

With the installation of an emergency control system to operate the swing bridge, sluice gates and lock chamber without using the PLC, the physical work in Muiden came to an end for EPC. "After the delivery of the new control installation, we assisted hydraulic specialist Molenmaker Techniek during the disconnection of the old drives and the installation and commissioning of the new ones," says De Rover. "A fitting conclusion to a project that we carried out with the utmost respect for the monumental object within a great cooperation with client Waternet and managing director Royal HaskoningDHV."
