
An unusual overflow facility was constructed in the municipality of Voorschoten this year. The project, commissioned by the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland, is unique because geopolymer concrete - a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete - was used for the concrete manhole. For both client and Aannemingsbedrijf Schouls B.V. this was the first time that this material was used as part of a sewer system.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the sewer and the purifier agreed: the Netherlands had to be drained. All the water from households and street gullies had to go down the pipe and to treatment. Mixed sewers were constructed at an admirable pace. Thus, Dutch municipalities managed to supply 99.6% of the Netherlands via sewerage [...].

In the Netherlands, many bridges, quay walls and buildings are under pressure. Not only are they reaching the end of their lifespan, external factors such as heavy traffic loads, construction activities and sagging soil conditions also play a role.
