Working together on the challenges of the future, that's what Topcon stands for in the Netherlands.

Working together on the challenges of the future, that's what Topcon stands for in the Netherlands.

Continuous changes in construction and infra are creating increasing pressure to work more efficiently. Margins in construction are increasingly slim and squeezed by failure costs. A recurring theme here is more results in less time. Not to mention the care or duty to reduce environmental impact and work in a safer way... It is quite a challenge.

"It starts with cooperation," says Richard Wiegers, Business Manager at Topcon Positioning Netherlands. "Working together with our clients is hugely important. By getting a good picture of what they are up against and knowing where their needs lie, it is possible to meet this challenge. Working together with partners within the chain also has added value. After all, we are all a link in the entire (construction) process."

Innovation

"Topcon's focus is on developing technology to provide customers with a solution that gives them something. Innovation is key to this and on that basis there are already some 3,500 patents that we apply in our products," said Wiegers. "Topcon Positioning Netherlands then translates Topcon's global vision back to the local market and looks at how we can apply innovations in the Netherlands." Wiegers cites an example of an innovative product: "Our GTL-1000: the BIM solution for construction. A total station and 3D scanner in one, for verification on construction sites. Within two hours you have a precise comparison of your 3D model with reality. This development represents a huge change in the processes on the construction site and provides immediate savings in the overhead costs of construction projects." But Wiegers emphasizes, "And yet it's not just about developing and making products. Rather, we look at their applicability within the workflow of the construction project, creating better work processes. That is an important spearhead within our business philosophy."

Data is becoming increasingly important. Digitalization on the construction site is a must for effective collaboration.

Data increasingly important

Wiegers says that investment is needed not only in hardware development, but especially in software because data is becoming increasingly important and the demand for it is increasing. "In construction, people are constantly producing data and constantly using data. To get from data to useful information means generating, combining, interpreting and applying it. We have to learn to think in data and use systems that help us do that. In doing so, collaboration is so incredibly important. In your team, in the company, in the project. Nobody builds alone. Collaboration means communication and data transfer. So for effective collaboration, Digitalization and Data are necessary."

Partnerships

Real change requires not only cooperation in day-to-day operations, but also partnerships," Wiegers believes. "Partnerships between parties who each have the same vision and knowledge in mind. We believe that we are all responsible for the challenges in the world, in the Netherlands, within companies, in our projects and together with each other. For example, we have started partnerships with Software developers such as Bentley, Autodesk and Infrakit. But also with several schools like the Soma College and the interactive experience museum Geofort and last but not least with industry associations like GeoBusiness Netherlands and the media companies. Only together can we face these challenges and become more efficient as a chain. If one link does not cooperate, if there is no communication between systems, platforms and parties, it will not work. But it must succeed and it will succeed! I am convinced of that."

Wiegers concludes that digitization, data, collaboration and partnerships ensure optimal workflow integration of the entire project, inside and outside. The positive result is an optimal way of working, fewer errors, more safety, optimization of resources, lower costs ánd faster. "A great development," he thinks.

Service & Support

"As mentioned, we as Topcon Positioning Netherlands are working on how to translate the Topcon corporate global vision back to the Dutch market. In this we especially want to make a difference in the area of service and support. By working very customer-oriented and providing support in a proactive way, we make the customer as self-reliant as possible. No customer wants downtime, so we help them think about how to prevent that from happening.

Our support colleagues are always ready to provide telephone support and our service colleagues are happy to serve customers in the service center or visit them in the field. We offer our customers various training courses in our training room in Bunschoten, but we can also provide on-site training. Quick guides and instructional videos are other tools that can provide support. Wiegers gives as an example the "first aid kit" that Topcon has developed for customers' machine control systems in earth moving. "But it can just as easily be a customized training; where we spar together with the customer and look at his needs and his work process for the right approach in this." To best serve customers, Topcon makes sure there is a lot of knowledge in each area. "Our motivated team is trained and always up to date with all the ins and outs and the latest technical products, software and information. We also find it important to put people in their strengths, looking at their quality and talent. Then you get more pleasure in your work and that in turn translates to our customer." Wiegers concludes, "We are a global company of stature, with many employees in many countries. Nevertheless, we get the feedback back from our customers that the contact is nice, they are helped pleasantly and we work with short lines. They feel as if they are dealing with a local supplier. That personal touch, with attention, that's in our DNA and is typical Topcon!"
