Rain showers are becoming more extreme, dry periods longer and heat more intense. Not only cities and residential areas have to deal with this, but also business sites, industrial zones, terminals, roofs and parking lots are being put to the test. The TBS-SVA Group develops and implements practical, robust and aesthetic solutions that make these outdoor spaces climate-adaptive and future-proof. “We want to make every site climate proof,” says Willy Bruckers. “From street to roof and everything underneath.”

It starts at the surface: heavy rainfall requires smart buffering and controlled drainage. Products such as concealed gutters, buffer gutters and robust (industrial) gullies ensure that water is safely collected and drained, even when used intensively and during peak downpours. “This is essential in places where there is a lot of paving, such as parking lots and industrial sites,” Bruckers explains.
At terminals, airports or distribution centers, additional requirements are added: robustness, flow and reliability. “That's where our solutions have to be able to take a beating. And they can,” says Bruckers. For locations with extreme demands, there are even buffer systems with concrete pits that can handle enormous amounts of water. Ideal for large-scale sites.

An important but often underestimated factor is the roof. “An enormous amount of water falls on large commercial buildings. This not only has to be drained, but also buffered and handled responsibly,” says Bruckers. “This is why TBS-SVA supplies, among other things, relief manholes with evacuation and drainage grates, which absorb peak downpours. Via moat elements and infiltration wells, the roof water is then released into the soil. Thus, the roof becomes an active link in the drainage system.”

Rainwater flowing across a site carries dirt and contaminants with it. “That's why we offer water treatment solutions such as settling pits, Vortex sludge traps, oil and gasoline separators, lamella separators and granular separators,” Bruckers says. “This makes the step to reuse or safe infiltration responsible.”
To avoid overloading the sewer system, TBS-SVA deploys so-called PorO flow inhibiting sumps. They capture a lot of water in a short time and then allow it to infiltrate gradually. According to Bruckers, they provide a delayed discharge of 1 to 10 liters per second per acre. “This keeps water management manageable, even during extreme precipitation,” he says.”

Not every solution needs to be hidden. In urban spaces, drainage gutters also contribute to the appearance. “Water drainage can be seen. With the right design, we make the outdoor space not only functional, but also more attractive,” Bruckers believes. Two notable innovations within this theme are the Mini Raingarden, a super-innovative compact green zone that buffers rainwater and reduces heat stress, and the Cool City Drain, which combines cooling and infiltration in an aesthetic line of gutters.
All solutions fall within TBS-SVA's Aquacare program. With this, the company offers an integrated approach to stormwater management, tailored to site, use and climate requirements. “Each site requires a different approach. We offer customized solutions in addition to standard products. We like to think with you about what works best in a particular area, tailored to local conditions and sustainability requirements,” Bruckers says. “We like to enter into discussions with architects, municipalities, building owners and landscape agencies. Often the key lies in combining solutions.”
As of October 1, Richard Költgen joins the team as climate adaptation project manager for construction and industry. He brings expertise in the field of liquid-proof substrates, gas station drainage and oil and sludge separation systems. It is a relatively new branch within TBS-SVA. “With Richard's knowledge we can advise and support both our existing and new clients even better, especially in the industry. With this we are taking the next step in our ambition to make climate adaptation widely applicable, from roof to parking lot.”
