For typical Dutch legislation, Veldhuizen Wagenbouw is building a 10×8 version based on that 8×8, making the maximum GVW of 49 tons.
The Scania XT, with its heavy axles, low-gearing manifold transmission and unique "Clutch on demand," is a true offroader. The driver can choose whether to let the Opticruise gearbox do the work or operate the clutch himself, and no other brand has that. Added to this is the fact that the Scania, with its 13-liter engine, especially in the 500-hp version, delivers a lot of torque at the bottom of the rev range. In addition, the Scania G cab is extremely spacious with, despite the high ground clearance, still an excellent entry level.
The factory-delivered Scania with a wheelbase of 5.35 meters was taken care of by Veldhuizen Wagenbouw, including the installation of 24-inch wheels at the rear, 375/90R22.5 tires on the front axle and an added steering, liftable center axle with 10 tons of axle load. This, air-sprung and forced-steered axle has a lift height of 18 centimeters and automatically lowers when loaded above 30 km per hour. Furthermore, components on the chassis were moved and the tandem chassis was moved to the rear to make room for the center axle. A Y-shaped 345-liter fuel tank was also fitted between axle 3 and 4.
Veldhuizen Wagenbouw's conversion results in a five-axle truck with a total GVW of 49 tons on license plates, which is a nice number for Dutch conditions. By combining the relatively low own weight with a smart tipper body, a payload comparable to the 50-tonners on the market remains.
During testing, the Scania proved to be a particularly comfortable vehicle, both loaded and empty. Even off-road, this Scania G500 XT 10×8 stands its ground thanks to its low gearing and sophisticated drive train with hub-reduced axles. The Scania XT series is equipped ex-factory with a steel front bumper with headlight guards, a luxurious interior and a reinforced bogie. The vehicle has a factory technical terrain weight of 60 tons which guarantees oversized components.
