Specialty contractor active in many areas of construction
With specialized and up-to-date equipment and motivated employees who are eager to produce a beautiful work, Bonneveld knows how to bring projects to completion.

Specialist contractor active in many areas of construction

In 25 years, Bonneveld in its present form has grown into a specialist contractor. With over 60 employees and an extensive fleet of machinery, the company is active in various fields, such as the excavation of dry and wet excavation pits, the performance of soil remediation, earthworks on or along railroad tracks and the realization of reinforced soil constructions. An interview with director-owner Harry van der Heiden and son Anco about the multidisciplinary character of the family business and the many appealing projects to which they make an essential contribution.

Excavated

The building pit of the Salmon Harbour Tower, of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, of the slip roads to the Second Coen Tunnel or that of the enormous bicycle shed behind Central Station in Groningen, they have all been excavated by Bonneveld. "If it doesn't just work out in the regular way in the dry, we excavate the tub in the wet," says Harry. "We also take care of the diving and pouring of the underwater concrete completely if required, as well as pumping out the tub and delivering it clean."

Remediation

Bonneveld is currently involved in the large-scale framework renovation in Amsterdam for Dura Vermeer, including on Ruiterkade and Jacob Catskade. Anco: "Here we take care of all the groundwork as well as the soil remediation," says Anco. "As a company we are certified in being allowed to excavate and remove (heavily) contaminated soil. In non virgin soil in mainly inner-city projects, we encounter all kinds of things, such as on the NDSM site in Amsterdam. There we provide remediation work for various VolkerWessels companies. At The Post in Rotterdam, we again work closely with an archaeological research firm."

Reinforced ground structures

In recent years, the reinforced soil construction department at Bonneveld has seen strong development. "Indeed, we have placed this specialty in a separate entity," Harry indicates. "We realize pile mattresses and reinforced soil structures for the most diverse applications and are involved in many large infrastructure works. At the A9 Groningen Ring Road, we built a dozen structures, both reinforced soil and EPS. On the A16 Rotterdam (Groene Boog) we will soon start several constructions and recently wind turbines were placed on our 'foundation' on the Maasvlakte."

Railinfra

For several years, Bonneveld has been an alliance partner of BAM Infra Nederland in the government's NABO program to replace unprotected level track crossings. "In that context, we have already built a large number of underpasses," says Harry. "The underpass is pre-built and retracted, lifted or driven in during a short decommissioning period of usually five days. We then take care of all the earthmoving, from removing the ballast and excavating to backfilling the soil after retracting and installing the ballast bed. In this way, we have now jointly completed about fifteen underpasses."

Grout recycling plant

To successfully complete such projects, you have to have your act together as a company, Harry believes. "With specialized and up-to-date equipment and motivated employees who are keen to do a great job. We should count ourselves lucky in that sense and develop equipment and concepts mostly in-house." A recent example is the grout recycling plant. "When turning in steel pipe piles, sometimes as much as 8 m3 of grout per pile comes to the surface. That is usually considered a waste product," Anco knows. "With our installation, we separate the three materials back into their original raw material - sand, cement and water - so they can be reused on site. That saves an awful lot of transport movements, often in the middle of the city. And so we keep innovating to do each job as efficiently as possible."
