First turbo traffic circles in Rotterdam port

At Distripark Maasvlakte in Dardanellenstraat, the first two turbo traffic circles in the Port of Rotterdam have been constructed. They replace two dangerous level crossings. The traffic circles are made of concrete because of the load caused by heavy transports, longer life and lower maintenance costs.

"The construction of the two traffic circles fits in with the Port Authority's policy to promote traffic safety in the port and to make DistriparkMaasvlakte a top location for warehousing. This is important because the direct presence of distribution centers ties cargo to the port," said Ronald Paul, COO of the Port Authority.

Special two-lane traffic circle
The turborotonde is a specially designed two-lane traffic circle, where one must choose the correct lane even before entering the traffic circle, because changing lanes on the traffic circle is impossible. The turborotonde has higher traffic safety compared to a standard two-lane traffic circle. The traffic flow is also better than the standard two-lane traffic circle and, of course, much better than the single-lane traffic circle.

Distripark Maasvlakte
Distripark Maasvlakte (DPMV) is an important location for distribution and empty depot activities on the Maasvlakte. Most of the Distripark is intended for distribution companies focusing on sea-load bound ADR goods, food and high-value consumer goods.

Dardanellen Street is the main axis of the Distripark. Over the years, the function of the road has changed with the development of Maasvlakte II and the realization of the Colorado Viaduct. It was once a local access road for the Distripark, but is now more of a through area access road. The layout of the road did not meet the requirements of its current use. Therefore, and in order to be able to give out the still undeveloped land at the Distripark in the western corner, it was necessary to invest in the new infrastructure.
