(Land) surveying 'track specialist'

Particularly in the infrastructure sector, the company has acquired a unique position and is considered the surveying track specialist in the Netherlands. For many years, engineering firm Smart Dimensions has focused on (land) surveying as a service company. Naturally, we want to know more about that. An interview with director Adrie van der Hijden.

Smart Dimensions has become big on and around the railroad. "It constitutes a separate branch of sport," says Van der Hijden. "We perform all kinds of work in the railroad, from zero survey to final revision. If required, we take care of the entire surveying part on behalf of the contractor, ProRail or engineering firm. On the basis of the specifications, we write a plan, possibly take care of the decommissioning ourselves, take care of the track measurements, as well as preparing a report based on the findings from the measurement data. This 'turnkey' surveying service is unique. For many years now, for example, we have successfully provided the surveying from A to Z for projects of Swietelsky Rail and Strukton Rail, among others."

The Trimble TX8 Scanner on tire undercarriage is designed to scan artwork from a road perspective.

For some time now, Smart Dimensions has also had a Trimble TX8 Scanner. "This enables us to both measure and scan the track simultaneously with very high accuracy," says Van der Hijden. "There is a lot of demand for this type of scan, where in the same scan of the track, for example, viaducts and other engineering structures are also visible. We can also place the same scanner on a tire chassis to scan the artworks from a road perspective. From the scans, we generate a point cloud that can be read into various design packages (including BIM)."
