In the Netherlands, it is a legal requirement that a work site be adequately lit. Including the barriers, road relocations and the immediate surroundings. Heijmans has a stock of lighting columns, but for the widening of the A1 motorway between Apeldoorn and Twello it is also relying on the stock and expertise of Lokhoff. This specialist in public and temporary roadway lighting has special fixtures and a smart monitoring system.
This system is unique in the Netherlands and developed entirely in-house by Lokhoff.
Lokhoff's stock is huge with over 2,000 light poles. Enough to illuminate a route of over 100 kilometers. "On the A1 project we have a first, because we are applying the Lokhoff LED fixture here for the first time," says Gertjan van de Braak of Lokhoff. "The fixture can take a beating. And should something unexpectedly go wrong, all components are easily interchangeable. That also makes the luminaire extremely durable. We have installed a total of about 100 lighting columns on the A1. Seven generators are running and we use our Smavos. These are our self-developed narrow trucks that are ideal on the often narrow emergency lanes."
A generator can supply power to about 20 to 24 fixtures. So this can also power Heijmans' lighting pylons. Ideal, because Lokhoff's generators use an average of just 1.5 liters of fuel per hour. Gertjan: "That is really minimal, especially when you consider that 20 to 24 lamps of 140 Watts are continuously powered with it. To further reduce CO2 emissions, we use HVO 100 biofuel."
"What also makes the setup unique is Lokhoff's monitoring system. With it, we can remotely signal malfunctions or switch the lighting on and off. We also send out a notification in the event of a power outage, for example. If Heijmans cannot solve the problem itself, we call in our own 24-hour fault-clearing service. A nice extra about the monitoring system is that we check daily from the office whether everything is working properly. That way we can be almost certain that everything starts up in the evening. This guarantees a safe situation and minimizes the need for us to go out in the dark to solve any malfunctions."
Lokhoff's temporary lighting and generators will remain on the project for about a year. "Heijmans has nothing to worry about. Service and maintenance is included in the contract, as is refueling."
