Innovative and emission-free noise barrier along A28 completed

Along the A28 motorway near Harderwijk, Holland Scherm has realized a future-proof noise barrier that significantly reduces traffic emissions and noise pollution for local residents. The project, carried out under a UAV-GC contract, is characterized by sustainable material choices, innovative technology and a completely emission-free construction method.

Design & form of contract

In collaboration with the municipality of Harderwijk, space was created within the framework for multiple innovations. The design was conceived with a clear ambition: a screen that not only effectively reduces noise, but also lasts for years thanks to sustainable materials and smart techniques.

Civil preparation and foundation

“We did a lot of civil engineering work and extended the earthwork wall with electric equipment,” says project manager Edwin Dening of Holland Scherm. “The entire earthmoving was carried out emission-free. Even the foundation profiles were placed with an electric crane and vibratory block, so the heavy elements were set accurately and sustainably.”

Construction & materials

The steel frames were supplied with a focus on strength and longevity. The concrete panels were manufactured and provided with basalt fiber reinforcement for a lighter, more durable panel. The glass panels used ensured that light and views were preserved for the environment.

Innovation

Atop the screen is an aerodynamic module that uses air currents for additional noise reduction. “This technology allowed the screen to be 2 meters lower without sacrificing performance,” explains Dening.

Sustainability & collaboration

Assembly was carried out with a special clamp attached to an emission-free crane. “The entire project was realized with electric equipment, which reduced CO2 and nitrogen emissions to zero. Due to intensive cooperation and tight project direction, the execution went smoothly and predictably,” Dening looks back.

Completion

Project manager Jan-Willem Roos of the municipality of Harderwijk emphasized during the handover that the client and contractor found each other optimally within the UAV-GC framework. “The result is an innovative, sustainable product that meets all requirements and expectations.” The new noise barrier along the A28 motorway is a textbook example of modern, sustainable infrastructure. With effective noise reduction, high-quality materials and emission-free construction, the project contributes to a better living environment and shows that building with zero emissions is feasible on a large scale.
