40,000 tons of basalt and slag foundation recycled

Reinforcing the dike between Gorinchem and Waardenburg releases waste material. Think of concrete, basalt and slag foundation. It is up to Kok Lexmond to process this in such a way that it can be reused.

Collaborating on a dike reinforcement project is not foreign to Kok Lexmond. For example, they are also involved in work on the Afsluitdijk. Marco de Rijke of Kok Lexmond: "But this time it is in our 'backyard' and that makes it special." The family business Kok Lexmond has been active in ground, road and hydraulic engineering, recycling and related activities for more than 40 years. "Our activities are very broad. Basically everything that is needed in an earthworks, road construction and hydraulic engineering project we can take care of. Site preparation, soil remediation, construction of sewers and drainage, mobile crushing, transportation, screening, you name it. One of our most important branches is the recycling of building materials. This is carried out mainly on site. For this, we have twelve mobile rubble crushers, various sieves and mobile mixing plants at our disposal. Waste materials are processed in our four approved processing plants, in Lexmond, Gorinchem, Meppel and Kerkrade. To this end, we deploy specialized equipment to make a variety of waste materials suitable for reuse. The waste processing activities mainly consist of crushing stone and concrete rubble and/or asphalt, taking in and separating construction and demolition waste, taking in and processing soil and immobilization. But we also specialize, for example, in recycling gypsum and aerated concrete."

Recycling

For the Gorinchem-Waardenburg dike section, Kok Lexmond has been called in for a variety of work. Marco sums up, "We supply about 130 thousand tons of mixed granulate. This is used for the road foundation on which asphalt will be laid. We crush 10 thousand tons of grauwacke, we sift soil and rubble, and we crush some 40 thousand tons of basalt and slag foundation. We process the waste materials released in the process, think basalt and slag foundation, into reusable material wherever possible." As much as possible, Kok Lexmond does the processing on site itself. This is possible thanks to new techniques and working methods. "A big advantage of this is that you can make huge savings in (transport) costs and you also reduce CO2 emissions."

Good cooperation

The company's previous experience on the Afsluitdijk comes in handy. "We think along with our clients. About logistics, about the reuse of materials but also about solutions if somewhere in the project things go differently than planned. We present possibilities and always look for the best solution for all parties. This is no different in this project. The cooperation with the Graaf Reinaldalliantie is very pleasant. There is good thinking, a deal is a deal and the work is done in good consultation."
