Everyone in Construction & Infra healthy and enjoying retirement? Then we need to work even safer and healthier. Not an easy task with the increasing work pressure and exposure to hazardous substances. The challenges are great, but the gains to be made are many times greater. The opportunities that developments present for the sector were published today in the Industry Report 2021.
One of the findings is that more than half of construction and civil engineering workers experience unsafe situations. Yet these same employees think no additional safety measures are needed. Furthermore, smoking employees exposed to hazardous materials are three times more likely to have respiratory complaints. In addition, 40% of construction site workers do not exercise intensively enough while performing physically demanding work. Two-thirds are also overweight. The result is a high risk of chronic diseases and disability.
Fortunately, there are also positive developments. Employees want to work on their development, provided the goal is clear. With a digital skill passport, employees can provide insight into not only knowledge but also experience. The sector is working on a pilot for a suitable tool that employees can use themselves. Despite the increasing workload, there is also good news on stress perception; coaching leadership has a positive impact on stress perception. Giving appreciation and recognition and the ability to resolve conflicts contributes to shorter absenteeism.
The collective bargaining parties in Construction & Infra are closely monitoring developments and will come up with appropriate measures where possible. For example, for the oldest age category of employees, the heavy duty. Employees can also take advantage of preventive care, such as participating in the DIA/PAGO or take advantage of facilities at no cost such as lifestyle- and stress coaching.
