Volvo CE expands mid-size electric machine offering with L120H Electric Conversion

SMT Netherlands took initiative

In 2020, SMT nestled itself as a co-leader in the sustainability development of the Construction & Infra industry. SMT joined ENI Foundation with the goal of accelerating the sustainability of the industry through cooperation and knowledge sharing. As a market leader, SMT took responsibility with the desire to bring an electric wheel loader to the market. SMT managed to get Volvo CE excited about this project after which Volvo took on the development of this machine. Important aspects for Volvo CE and SMT were durability, safety, employability, performance and comfort.

The result is impressive. The new Volvo L120H Electric Conversion is coming to the Netherlands soon. Meet the L120H Electric Conversion from Volvo, a wheel loader that provides 100% of power with 0% of emissions. In this post, learn more about the L120H Electric Conversion and why this machine is an important step toward a sustainable future.

Developed with partners

Developed in collaboration with partners - Parker Hannifin and converted by Volvo's own CE Engineering Solutions - the 20-ton L120H Electric Conversion will be commercially available to selected customers in Europe during 2023. Using the conventional machine as its base, which is still offered to customers, the electric conversion model delivers the same performance with the advantage of being emission-free.

Collaboration to accelerate climate action

Volvo CE understands that we must act now to make the construction industry carbon neutral. That is why it is working with CE Engineering Solutions and selected electromobility partners to accelerate the availability of commercialized electric solutions across all segments and applications. This latest collaboration to expand its line of electric wheel loaders follows Volvo CE's investment in Dutch manufacturer Limach, announced in June, to expand the company's portfolio of electric excavators.

This partnership approach, which will enable faster market introduction, runs parallel to the ongoing development of more electric solutions - such as the EC230 Electric, a 23-ton battery electric excavator built with Volvo CE's own advanced technology. Both approaches are necessary if the industry as a whole is to meet CO2 targets, as set out by Volvo CE in its pledge to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 - with significant emissions reductions as early as 2030 - as part of the Science Based Targets initiative.

Carl Slotte, Head of Sales Region Europe at Volvo CE, says: "There is no time to wait - we must deliver solutions that enable our customers to achieve their goals on reducing CO2 emissions. Change starts here. Our commitment to partnership allows us to be at the forefront of transforming our industry with electric solutions built to meet market demand and tailored to our customers' changing needs. By working together, we are expanding our portfolio of electric machines, increasing the versatility of our offerings and transforming our industry toward a carbon-neutral future."

New powertrain, new business model

The L120H Electric Conversion will be available this year. Customers will benefit from a new business model that makes it easy to go electric.

100% power with 0% emissions. The L120H Electric Conversion delivers the same powerful performance as its diesel counterpart, but with 0% exhaust and virtually silent operation. These benefits combine to provide greater comfort for both the operator and those working near the machine. The 240 kWh battery provides about five hours of run time in most medium-duty applications. In line with Volvo's existing charging solutions, it is estimated that the machine can be recharged from 0-100% in just 1.5 to 2 hours.

With the L120H Electric Conversion, customers have the following features as standard: Comfort Drive Control, Load Assist with on-board weighting plus radar detection with our new Collision Mitigation System. In addition, the L120H Electric Conversion will be supported by special applications that allow the operator to check battery and charge status and pre-heat the cab.

Depending on market demand, this offers the possibility of converting existing customers' L120H wheel loaders to electric in the future.
