Two circular bridges built for Floriade Expo 2022

Two circular bridges were unveiled today in Almere - an initiative of Bruggencampus, Municipality of Almere and Province of Flevoland. The Beverbrug and bridge Rondje Weerwater show what the future of bridge building will look like. With cementless concrete, co-creation in tendering and reused materials.

The unveiling

The bridges were unveiled by deputy Jan-Nico Appelman, alderman Jan Hoek, architect René van Zuuk and Erik Kijlstra director of Reimert Bouw en Infrastructuur. They accepted the circular passports. In which a symbolic comparison was made with the CO₂ savings in the form of, among other things: 26 return trips to America by plane and 21,840 dryer runs.

Saving 57.7 tons of CO₂.

With the construction of the bridges, we show that innovation is possible and affordable. By using co-creation in the tendering process, where the boundaries were searched and stretched, an impressive result has been delivered. The bridges are truly Almere: designed by an Almere architect, built by an Almere contractor and made of cementless concrete consisting of recycled Almere concrete rubble. Second-hand tubular piles, reused rebar and wood for the railings were also used. The Beaver Bridge has a bee ribbon to absorb CO₂ and particulate matter. All makers are proud that the circular construction of the bridges saves 57.7 tons of CO₂ emissions.

Circular desire

During the unveilings, attendees could submit their circular wish to keep the circular -cementless- mill in Flevoland running at full capacity. Do you have a circular wish for Flevoland? Let us know via info@bruggencampus.nl

Bridge campus Flevoland-Floriade

Before 2040, 85,000 bridges and viaducts must be replaced or renovated in the Netherlands. This requires a huge investment and sufficient design and construction capacity. Sustainability, circularity and life-cycle costing are indispensable here. This is an ambitious circular challenge, which the Bridge Campus in Flevoland at the Floriade park is investigating and applying in practice. One of the ways we are doing this is by working together in a Common Data Environment and using the European Regional Development Fund.
