Start of repair work after high water damage at Maas Stuwweg

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, start idverde Realisatie, team PCN Maas, commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat with the repair operation after the high water damage at the Stuwweg in Maastricht. The work during this complex operation is likely to take about 6 to 8 weeks.

Reason

On Jan. 3, an emergency situation was reported at the spillway dam near the Stuwweg in Maastricht. This dam, which normally provides standing water where houseboats are located, appeared to be damaged over a width of 50 meters. This was due to a brief high water period around Christmas, followed by a higher water discharge peak for the Meuse in early 2024. The breach of the dam caused a strong flow of water, creating the risk of houseboats becoming detached. The houseboat residents were evacuated for safety reasons in an operation coordinated by the fire department, police and safety region. From then on, idverde Realisatie, team PCN Maas worked intensively with various parties to address the consequences of the high water damage. On the night of Jan. 3 and 4, one houseboat became detached and floated against the Stuwweg bridge, closing the bridge to traffic due to the danger of collapse. What are we going to do?

Over the next six to eight weeks, the following repair and reinforcement work will be carried out:

  • Stabilizing the damaged bridge
  • Salvage the houseboat that drifted against the bridge.
  • Prepare a plan for repairing or replacing the damaged bridge.
  • Establish a temporary connection for traffic from Oude Smeermaeserweg / Bosscherweg to Stuwweg to replace the ferry and until the damaged bridge is repaired.
