Lightweight sculptural structures

The double underpass in the HOV in 't Gooi project, as well as the noise barriers and edge elements of the fly-over and nature bridge, have been executed by Takke Breukelen in an architecturally beautiful design. For the specialist in lightweight and image-defining constructions for infrastructure, it is rightfully a multifaceted and multidisciplinary project. Director Geert Takke updates us.

"We were asked by BAM Infra Nederland to help think about initially the decoration of the double underpass," Takke begins. "They were engineering the concrete structure themselves and engaged us because of the many interfaces with its finish. The underpass comprises two layers: for the rapid transit tube, based on the image quality plan, we developed a design with flat metal panels in a concrete look, while perforated metal panels were chosen for the slow traffic tube."

Natural pattern

Takke Breukelen engineered, produced and will also assemble the metal panels. A total of approximately 3,000 m2 of flat panels and 400 m2 to perforated panels. "The natural pattern for the perforated panels was conceived by a well-known artist that we consulted to translate into a manufacturable design," Takke explains. "In the design of the panels, we also took into account other interfaces, such as the design and implementation of the functional roadway lighting and fire hydrants. So we take complete responsibility for arriving at a realizable solution based on the client's requirements, an image quality plan or an architectural design vision. The main contractor, in this case BAM, provides the concrete, we do the rest."

Secret of the blacksmith

Following the same philosophy, the noise barriers and edge elements for both artworks were designed, delivered and assembled. "The noise barriers are made of Corten steel, the edge elements - which are curved in a radius - in aluminum. The design took into account the prevention of rust marks from the noise barriers on the underlying edge elements." In what way that was done, Takke would not say. "That's the secret of the 'smith,'" he laughs. "The beauty of this project is that it combines different disciplines, also partly along the railroad and as far as the underpass is concerned in a busy built-up area. That gives the work an entirely unique dynamic. Although the most technically ingenious work, realizing the double underpass lies with BAM, we have the honor of giving it a distinguished finish."

For eight generations, Takke Breukelen has specialized in the design and realization of lightweight structures in metal for infrastructure in particular, the last hundred years of which in Breukelen. "In addition, we have a penchant for glass and quite an extensive composite program," Takke adds. "Especially when a lot of design and development is required, we know how to realize a lot of added value with our own engineering department."
