The Municipality of Almere has commissioned Koenders Instruments, in collaboration with Witteveen + Bos, to support the municipality in making the city climate-proof and water-robust for the next seven years. We will do this by measuring groundwater, surface water, rainwater and wastewater in the city and processing this data into useful information. We also deploy smart algorithms and provide analysis and advice to make the urban water system function as well as possible. With these tools, the municipality can take proactive measures and carry out maintenance to prevent nuisance situations, such as heavy showers and extreme drought.

The solution offered by Koenders Instruments and Witteveen + Bos consists of a number of components:
A measurement plan will be developed to determine the density and type of sensors to be measured in order to most effectively meet the City of Almere's measurement goals. This measurement plan is created by analyzing relevant policy documents, existing measurement data and available models of the current water systems. In addition, the exact information needs and measurement goals of the municipality are inventoried.
Based on the measurement plan, Koenders Instruments is setting up a fine-mesh sensor network in the city and outlying areas. The sensors measure and transmit real-time, various types of water and climate-related data to a secure cloud environment. As a result, the sensor network provides insight into the current functioning of the urban water system.
In addition to the data from the sensor network, available and public data from other sources and domains are also linked to the system in the cloud environment. Koenders Instruments and Witteveen+Bos process, validate and enrich all data into usable information and visualize it in online dashboards for various users. This also enables data-driven maintenance of sensors and the water system: deviations are automatically and timely recognized and signaled.
As a final step, Witteveen + Bos performs substantive hydraulic and hydrological data analyses and the municipality receives advice on optimization of the urban water system.
What is innovative about this project is that the entire process from measurement plan to information provision and consultancy is the responsibility of the consortium. This allows us to deliver maximum information.
For example, Koenders Instruments and Witteveen+Bos are working with the Municipality of Almere to design and manage the urban water system climate adaptive, water- and heat robust, so that Almere is a pleasant place to live for its residents.
Koenders Instruments is transforming physical reality into online data. Through this data we gain more insight about what is happening in our living environment. But not only that, the data support and alert us where necessary. Technology never stands still, which is why every day we work on new applications and services to help with smart integrated sensor (data) technology.
