A hefty article in the Financieel Dagblad that doesn't lie. Greenhouse gas emissions are becoming increasingly expensive. Last weeks the price of a ton of CO2 emissions even reached 44 euros. But what does this really mean and how does it affect your business? We asked ourselves the same question. When you read the article carefully, it becomes clear that CO2 emissions will only increase and that this upward trend will not stop for some time.
The purpose of this, of course, is for polluting companies to reduce their emissions and make investments in cleaner technology profitable. For a long time, the ETS price was actually too low for this purpose, but with a price above 40 euros, the cost is now really starting to bite.
The relatively high price now hurts only large organizations that have to buy the rights to produce. You can think of organizations like Shell, TATA Steel, RWE, Vattenfall and Chemelot. That is exactly the intention, of course. But it also potentially puts European industry at a disadvantage against competitors elsewhere in the world. Because most countries outside Europe do not have a system to price CO2 emissions. By the way, non-EU countries like Norway, Switzerland, Iceland do participate in EU ETS. The United Kingdom stepped out with the brexit, but is in the process of setting up its own trading system.
Right now, only the big polluters pay. But when you look at this realistically, we expect the trend to spread to all companies, large or small. When a company causes emissions, whether it is driving a fossil-fueled car or using an excavator on a construction site, a CO2 surcharge will eventually be imposed on everything. The regulations will become stricter and stricter until companies have no choice but to switch to a zero-emission vehicle or building. It must be profitable for your company to make this step and that is why we are working hard on the further development of our electric excavators. So to make it affordable for everyone.
