Makita is expanding the range of machines on the XGT battery platform (40V and 2x40V) with some professional battery machines for road construction. In addition to cut-off saws, tire saws, rammers and vibratory plates now follow. "With an XGT battery pack you can not only work longer, the power can also be boosted up to 130%."

With more and more clients prescribing emission-free work, the demand for power tools is also rapidly increasing in road construction. "The CE001G cut-off saw is particularly popular," says Arjen Peeters, product/account manager at Makita. "Working with a smelly, crackling, fuel-powered cutter is no longer necessary, and the risks of quartz dust are reduced by the standard water connection. The time-consuming and incendiary fuel refilling is also a thing of the past; from now on you replace the batteries with a single hand movement and you can get straight on with your work. The 2 x 40V battery delivers as much power as a 70cc fuel grinder." 

Makita developed some special grinding wheels for the cordless machines. Diamond wheel E-12996 is specially developed for use with the battery-powered cut-off machines in various types of stone. The thickness is 2.8 mm, which provides less friction, so for longer grinding. The height of the segment is 8 mm and the special setting of the smaller diamonds, as well as the superior bond, ensure optimum performance. In addition to this diamond wheel, a special cut-off wheel for metal is also available, the E-12790-5. Its updated composition allows for faster and longer grinding than traditional cutting wheels. 

Testers

The new battery platform is being well received by the market, Peeters continued. "New machines are immediately put out to testers in the market. These users who are among the first to test with them are impressed with the power and performance of the machines. The performance of the battery-powered machines is equal to that of fuel-powered machines and in some cases even better." That's because XGT is a dynamic battery platform: the battery communicates digitally with the machine to work optimally. The machine recognizes the battery model and responds immediately to its status. It then optimizes the power supply to the machine to make the machine perform better, and minimizes the battery load. "So with the XGT batteries, not only can you work longer, but it also screws up the power to about 130%. We custom program the controllers for each type of machine, so the machine is always operating at optimum power."

Reliable and dynamic

The slogan of the XGT platform is: maximum performance on battery. Some 150 machines now operate on the 40V batteries, and more than a hundred more will be added in the next 18 months. In road construction, these are, for now, cut-off saws, tire saws, vibratory plates and rammers. There are also various machines for heavier jobs in construction, industry and cleaning. The robust construction, dust protection and splash-proof design make XGT a very reliable and dynamic platform.
