Ecocem and TITAN Group team up to accelerate rollout of low-carbon cement

First commercial collaboration with traditional cement industry for ACT cement using local SCMs

Ecocem, European market leader and frontrunner in low CO2 cement technology, today announced the signing of the previously announced partnership with TITAN Group, a leading international producer of building and infrastructure materials. Working closely together, new innovative low-CO2 cements will be developed and supplied.

Focusing initially on the Greek market, TITAN and Ecocem will jointly develop and implement a customized version of ACT, Ecocem's scalable low-CO2 cement technology. In the newly developed cement, most of the clinker will be replaced by locally available alternative binders (SCMs). This will reduce the CO2 footprint of the new cement by as much as 70%, without compromising on performance and workability.

The first volumes of this customized version of ACT will be delivered in Greece. This technological collaboration with Ecocem marks an important step for TITAN towards net zero emissions and is in line with the strategic ambition to expand the portfolio of innovative and sustainable products. The new cement is cost-efficient, immediately applicable and meets all performance standards.

Technology Deal

This deal is also an important first for Ecocem. This joint development and technology transfer agreement is the first signed by Ecocem with a major international cement producer and the first commercial application of ACT technology working with a wide range of SCMs, not just blast furnace slag. This development promises a significant positive impact on the construction industry's carbon footprint. Cement is estimated to account for about 50% of "embodied carbon" in new construction projects and nearly 8% of the world's total CO2 emissions.

According to Donal O'Riain, founder and Group Managing Director of Ecocem, signing this agreement with a partner of the size and caliber of TITAN Group demonstrates the confidence the market has in ACT technology. "It demonstrates the value of our continued focus on research and innovation and showcases our ability to bring groundbreaking new concepts for low CO2 cement from the laboratory to the construction site. ACT technology reduces emissions by using cement much more efficiently, without the need for a significant 'green premium.' This collaboration with TITAN is accelerating the deployment of various SCMs worldwide, providing ACT with a realistic path to rapid, affordable decarbonization."
