Construction machinery industry must also face today's problems

Climate change, finite natural resources, the lack of specialized personnel: the global construction machinery industry must also face today's major problems. Modern construction processes and materials can be part of the solution. bauma, which will take place in Munich from October 24 to 30, 2022, offers a comprehensive overview of the latest technologies and important developments in this field.

The procurement and processing of building materials, the construction process itself, maintenance and demolition of buildings and other infrastructure pieces result in significant carbon dioxide emissions. For example, cement production accounts for eight percent of global carbon dioxide emissions.

CCU and CCS in the cement industry

“If we want to make significant improvements here, some fundamental technological changes must take place,” says Christoph Danner, expert for construction machinery and building material systems at Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau e. V. (VDMA). One option that he says offers great potential is to capture CO2 and then use it (Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU)) or to store it safely and permanently in deep geological rock layers (Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)).

Saving resources through recycling

In addition to measures to protect the climate, the construction industry is also facing calls to conserve resources in the future. In recent years, sand has become the center of public attention. After all, it is the most widely used material, but it is becoming increasingly scarce. One way to save resources is to process demolition materials on site using modern crushing and screening technologies so that they can be reused there and then in new construction projects.

Modern technologies make construction professions more attractive

As a further challenge, the global construction boom requires an increase in productivity. “Given the shortage of specialized personnel, this problem can no longer be solved by simply employing ‘more people,’” says Tim-Oliver Müller, managing director of Hauptverband der Deutschen Bauindustrie e.V. Instead, the focus must be on digital working methods, innovative products and machines, and the opportunities offered by industrial and, increasingly, AI-supported processes.

One of the main topics at bauma 2022

“Tomorrow's construction methods and materials” is one of the main topics at bauma. At the world's leading trade fair for construction machinery, construction materials machinery, mining machinery, construction vehicles and construction equipment, important market players present their latest solutions. The bauma Forum also provides an opportunity to discuss current trends.
