"Nice that in this way we can jointly give more space to education in Leiden."
Leiden University of Applied Sciences has experienced significant growth in recent years and now has 12,500 students and more than 1,200 employees. "An expansion of our campus is badly needed due to this growth," said Franziska Brouwer, Director of Facilities Management & Housing at Leiden University of Applied Sciences. "We want to continue to facilitate a wide variety of courses, educational activities and people under one roof. Meeting and interaction are a valuable part of studying and these are central to the expansion of the campus."
Together with architecture studio DP6, the college developed the project itself, up to and including the final design. J.P. van Eesteren and Croonwolter&dros are responsible for the technical design up to and including the realization, with J.P. van Eesteren handling the construction activities and Croonwolter&dros the installations. Both companies are part of TBI, a network organization in the fields of engineering, construction & development and infrastructure. Construction will begin next month, with completion scheduled for late 2022.
The new building will be connected via an atrium to the rear of the college's existing buildings. "In accordance with the wishes of both staff and students of Hogeschool Leiden, the six-story building of some 9,600 square meters will be quite spacious," explained Marco Peppel, J.P. van Eesteren board chairman. "We are proud that this will allow us to contribute to knowledge development and exchange of the future. The building offers every opportunity for that in the future; as well as for meeting and recreation."
"We like to actively support educational institutions in their ambitions," adds Mark van Wordragen, Croonwolter&dros director. "For example, the climate systems are built modularly, for optimal use of space in the building."
