Broeze Nijverdal was commissioned by Van Hattum en Blankevoort to supply a wide variety of steel auxiliary and support structures for Hollandse Delta Water Board's Oudenhoorn Pumping Station, both civil and structural. According to estimator Remco Horenberg, ensuring the intended service life of the steel structures required a sophisticated interplay between conservation on the one hand and material thickness on the other.
Delivering a diversity of constructions in which each component needs specific attention is Broeze's strength, says Remco. "In both small and large projects, we focus on diversity. That's where we really distinguish ourselves. And that was exactly what was required here at Oudenhoorn Pumping Station: a diversity of steel auxiliary and support structures for use inside and outside the dikes. Outside the dike, for example, we supplied the walkway with railings for the outflow location, as well as the duckweed grid in the outflow basin and the dirt grids that seal the basin. Inside the dike, we provided a number of support structures with handrails and plastic gratings as well as the structural steel structure for building the pump house."
Broeze fulfilled the intended design life of 100 years for this project in several ways. "Part of the structures were hot-dip galvanized and 2-layer powder coated, while for a number of components we deliberately chose not to conserve them. Here the solution was found in a greater material thickness, such as for the duckweed grid. This is constantly in the water, is slightly heavier-dimensioned and is therefore allowed to rust off a bit," Remco explains. "We are strong in thinking along with these kinds of project-specific solutions and also in demonstrating the quality. In this project, the project-specific was also reflected in the assembly and phasing. We closely followed the contractor's planning, so that we could also use each other's facilities for efficient and safe assembly."
With more than 100 years of experience, Broeze is a well-known and recognized player in the market. The company is extensively certified in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 3834-2, VCA and the NEN-EN 1090 up to execution class 4, among others. "We are also familiar with additional requirements from the Department of Public Works such as the ROK 1.4 and the ROK 2.0 and we work in accordance with level 3 on the CO2-performance ladder."
