Zero emission zones in cities

Zero emission zones in cities

Over the next four years, the mayor and aldermen want to work together with residents, business owners, the transport sector and other stakeholders on clean and smart provisioning in the area within the city canal. The result: a cleaner and attractive city center where living conditions and accessibility go hand in hand.

In the national Climate Agreement, it has been agreed that 30 to 40 medium-sized cities, including Zwolle, will have introduced zero emission zones by 2025. Supplies in these cities will then be made only by sustainable mobility, such as hydrogen and electric vehicles or by bicycle. There are already several initiatives in downtown Zwolle for home delivery of groceries, smart provisioning of restaurants and parcel lockers. Carriers, entrepreneurs and bicycle couriers are also working together to deliver orders and freight.

Broad support for zero emission zones

We are seeing it more and more lately. Cities that want to join the zero emission zone. In doing so, they also indicate that they want to give companies the opportunity to go to zero emission vehicles. That is why they are already announcing the intention to want the inner cities to be zero emission by 2025. In this way, the cities are creating clarity and companies can start anticipating this.

Not the only

Zwolle will not be the last city to want its city center to be zero emission. Royal Haskoning DHV says they are also busy with the following cities; Enschede, Almelo, Hengelo, Emmen, Leeuwarden, Alkmaar, Hoorn, Zaanstad and Dordrecht and more broadly in the urban regions of Twente and Amsterdam. So you can clearly see that we can no longer get away from it. Zero emission is a fact. But what will it be like for construction sites and the machinery running there? That too is expected to become zero emission zones as soon as it is near a city or a nature reserve. It is gaining support and the government sees a need to grow this rapidly. Whether this is by starting a testing ground or by making subsidies available. In short, developments are not standing still and neither are we.
