Smart specialty trailer concepts

They are a broad, versatile producer of trailer concepts according to customer-specific requirements. We are talking about Trias Trailers BV from Apeldoorn. The company, started in 1959, produced the so-called "iron dogs" at the time. It grew in the production of market and sales vehicles, which in turn was followed by the production of heavier transport equipment. It now specializes in producing custom trailers, semi-trailers and truck bodies that are also durable.

Leo Oosterkamp, director of Trias Trailers, explains how that works. "Actually every order starts with a cup of coffee with the customer, where in an extensive conversation the wishes are discussed. We look closely at what they want to have transported, don't just listen but also advise what fits within the possibilities, taking into account requirements and legislation of RDW and government. Together with the customer, we look for the ideal version of a vehicle." Trias Trailers performs all engineering itself, including strength calculations. The 3D drawings make it visual for the customer. Based on this design, adjustments can be made. This creates the final design and it can go into production.

Well-preserved chassis
Trias Trailers' chassis and steel parts are fully hot-dip galvanized, which means that all parts go completely through a zinc bath of about 400 degrees. "This gets you into all the nooks and crannies, unlike a coating or paint job on a finished product. Just take an extendable trailer. Here all the tight tubes inside and out are also galvanized with zinc. It prevents problems with sliding out and rusting through from the inside in the long run, this allows us to ensure a permanently preserved finished product." Trias Trailers has been using this technique since 1979. First for the small chassis and when a lot of experience was built up, later the larger and heavier products followed. After galvanizing, a product is assembled and, if necessary, RDW or TÜV approved. Galvanizing is outsourced by Trias Trailers, as is most machining work. Parts and semi-finished products are delivered set and cut, after which the welding and assembly are taken care of by Trias Trailers. It typifies the trailer builder's fast and efficient working method.

Specialist customization
In recent years, specialty assignments have been increasing. From heavy and light trailers, extendable semi-trailers, center-axle and drawbar trailers, to car and truck transporters and LHV combinations. "You can also come to us for auto bodies, market trucks, mobile brake test stands, stage trucks and other specials. We even manufacture trailers with a neck thickness of 120 mm, on which a 60-ton meter roller crane can run. It was all on display at the Transport Compleet Exhibition in Hardenberg. If I say that we even make undercarriages for mobile hospitals and for the flower and plant industry in the Westland, then I can say that we can serve most of the market," Oosterkamp says. Finally, he mentions the trailer for Compactrent. "A 3-axle semi-trailer with a very low loading floor height (78 cm) of which the last axle is a trailing steered axle. The rear of the loading floor is hydraulically articulated so that tracked vehicles can be loaded without ramps. Also, the loading floor can be widened by 50 cm especially for wide machines and has convenient storage for the widening beams and integrated width boards. The trailer is equipped with a heavy lashing eye at every 50 cm to secure the load. Really everything has been thought of and that is our strength," Oosterkamp concludes.
