New feature in Volvo Trucks' steering system intervenes at lightning speed in the event of a blowout

New feature in Volvo Trucks' steering system intervenes at lightning speed in case of tire blowout

Volvo has further refined its renowned dynamic steering system Volvo Dynamic Steering. It can now detect a blowout and take immediate action to keep the truck safely on the road.

The new generation Volvo Dynamic Steering can detect a flat front tire and, within a split second, automatically reduce the impact by helping the driver keep the truck on course. The system reduces the lateral forces that can result from sudden air loss in a tire.

"A blowout can cause a truck to suddenly veer off course, with potentially fatal consequences. This innovation increases safety for both drivers and other road users and makes our Volvo Dynamic Steering system better than ever," said Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic Safety Director at Volvo Trucks.

Since the introduction of the first generation in 2013, Volvo Dynamic Steering has been helping drivers worldwide drive effortlessly and safely. The new feature comes on top of the existing benefits of Volvo Dynamic Steering, such as 75% reducing the steering force required during low-speed driving - a major benefit for truck drivers, as it reduces stress and physical strain on long trips.

Reduce safety risks - stay the course

In a front tire blowout, the initial puncture and escaping air often cause the front wheels to steer and the vehicle to deviate from course. Without support systems, the driver must immediately take the wheel to avoid an accident or rollover, but statistics show that this is a very difficult situation to manage.

Volvo Dynamic Steering helps the driver keep the truck within the lane. If the system detects a flat front tire, it does not wait for the symptoms to appear - so this means a faster response.

Reduce fatigue and physical strain

Volvo Dynamic Steering not only supports in emergency situations such as a blowout, but also helps make maneuvering easier. It also provides greater steering control and stability at different speeds and road conditions.

Professional drivers can experience prolonged physical strain and fatigue, especially in the neck, back and shoulders. This is due to prolonged sitting, exposure to vibration and having to make constant adjustments. Volvo Dynamic Steering reduces vibration and adapts to different road conditions.

Volvo Dynamic Steering is designed to:

  • detect and reduce involuntary steering movements;
  • automatically compensate for uneven road surfaces and eliminate vibrations;
  • detect skidding movements and provide light counter-steering assistance to stabilize the vehicle;
  • detect lane deviations and provide gentle counter-steering and vibration signals to the driver;
  • ease the strain on the driver's back, neck and shoulders by reducing the need for continuous steering corrections.

More facts about Volvo Dynamic Steering:

  • At low speed, the required steering force is reduced by about 75% - ideal when reversing and maneuvering in tight spots.
  • At higher speeds, the truck remains stable even on bad roads or in crosswinds.
  • The steering wheel automatically centers as soon as the driver's grip decreases.
  • The technology is based on hydraulic power steering, supported by an electronically controlled electric motor that continuously adjusts and provides additional power when needed.
  • The system can be combined with Stability Assist, which provides light steering assistance in detecting skidding hazards.
  • Can also be combined with Lane Keeping Assist, which helps keep the truck on course during deviations.
  • Pilot Assist, based on Volvo Dynamic Steering, continuously monitors the truck's position on the road and provides active steering assistance. It also monitors the vehicle in front to maintain a safe distance.
  • Volvo Dynamic Steering is customizable with personalized settings that allow steering resistance and response to be tailored to the driver's preference. There are preset modes for different road types and the choice of fully customizable parameters.
  • Volvo Dynamic Steering is available for the Volvo FH, FH Aero, FMX and FM models. Customers can contact their nearest Volvo dealer for more information.
