In brainport Eindhoven, where technology and craft meet, Makita Netherlands celebrates its 50th anniversary. Product and account manager Arjen Peeters is proud of that milestone and what has been achieved in half a century. "We have grown rapidly and have greatly expanded and improved our range," he enthuses.
One of the most profound changes occurred in 2005, with the introduction of the lithium-ion battery. "That was a gamechanger," says Arjen. "It marked the beginning of our LXT technology, which is interchangeable between more than 380 different machines. That's really unique in the industry." These innovations have helped Makita not only stay ahead of the competition, but also build strong relationships with customers. With some dealers and relationships, we have been working together for 50 years."
With the rise of cordless tools, Makita has a clear goal in mind - a fuel and cordless future. The introduction of the XGT 40V Max platform in 2020 is an important step in that direction. "This powerful new series allows us to develop machines that are as powerful as their counterpart with a 70cc combustion engine," Arjen explains. "With XGT technology, we can not only meet but exceed the expectations of professionals."
The construction and infrastructure sector has set the goal of working as emission-free as possible from 2028. Makita emphatically responds to this with the XGT platform, which offers professionals the tools needed to realize this ambition. Arjen: "We find that users who work with 40V tools once are more likely to purchase other machines from the line. The power and reliability speak for themselves. A robust construction makes the XGT batteries resistant to dust and water."
The XGT platform is suitable for a wider range, from drill or impact screwdriver to breaker, cutter or chainsaw. Arjen emphasizes the advantages of the new technology: "The higher voltage provides more power and less heat generation, which means machines can be used longer and more intensively." With the 40V and 2x40V range, the Japanese manufacturer offers a serious alternative to 230V or fuel-powered machines for professionals in the infrastructure, rail and green space sectors, among others.
The demand for cordless tools is growing steadily for both light and heavy-duty applications. Makita is responding by continuing to invest in both the LXT and XGT platforms. "We want customers to have the choice of continuing to use the familiar 18V tools. A machine from the powerful 40V Max line is not necessarily better; it depends on the specific application," says Arjen. "Our customers know what they need and we make sure they get the best tools to do the job."
To further improve the user experience, Makita has also invested in innovative charging systems. The new BCC charging boxes can charge up to eight 8 Ah batteries or 12 4 Ah batteries simultaneously. "In just ten hours, all batteries are ready for the next working day," Arjen explains. The width of the XGT machine park requires a dynamic platform, and six different batteries are available for this purpose: BL4020 (2 Ah), BL4025 (2.5 Ah), BL4040 (4 Ah), BL4040F (4 Ah) BL4050F (5 Ah) and BL4080F (8 Ah).
To optimize safe and sustainable use of their products, Makita also offers training at its training center in Eindhoven. "Knowledge is power, training the way there," Arjen emphasizes. "We want to offer customers the opportunity to increase their knowledge about our machines and accessories so that they can get the most out of the cordless tools. Want to take your knowledge to the next level by attending a training session? You can! Upon request, our advisors will be happy to arrange this for you."
With half a century of experience and innovation, Makita Netherlands looks confidently to the future. Ambitions are high, and with a solid foundation of technological advances and customer-oriented solutions, nothing seems to stop the company. The anniversary is not only a time to look back on successes, but also to look ahead to what lies ahead. With Eindhoven as the birthplace of innovation, Makita is determined to play a major role in a cord- and emission-free future.
