Volvo Trucks commits to further saving fuel and CO2 emissions with stop-start engine technology

Volvo Trucks pushes for further fuel and CO2 savings with stop-start engine technology

Volvo Trucks’ advanced system I-Roll is being expanded to include stop-start engine technology. This new feature helps to further reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. Volvo Trucks is the first brand to adopt this technology.

By winning the 2025 Green Truck Award test with the Volvo FH Aero, it has been proven that Volvo Trucks' latest technologies and innovations actually have an impact on fuel consumption. The Aero cab introduced in 2024 and the further aerodynamic improvements that followed deliver significant savings in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The latest addition to Volvo Trucks’ commitment to fuel economy was developed in-house and is based on the existing I-See and I-Roll technologies. The new stop-start engine function continuously monitors road data, such as inclines and curves. If an approaching descent is detected on the route, the engine is temporarily switched off. No fuel is then consumed and thus there are no CO2 emissions via the exhaust.

“Our engineers have done it again: developed a new engine technology that contributes to more efficient transport,” said Jan Hjelmgren, head of product management at Volvo Trucks. “As part of our three-pillar strategy, we continue to innovate to make our internal combustion engines even better and reduce our impact on the environment.” Volvo Trucks' three-pillar strategy focuses on making internal combustion engines powered by renewable fuels, battery-electric and fuel cell-electric trucks more efficient.

The engine's new stop/start functionality is activated at speeds above 60 km/h. Depending on conditions such as topography and ambient temperature, this can provide up to 1% additional fuel and CO2 savings, on top of those already achieved. Volvo Trucks' innovations and efficiency improvements have a positive impact on road transport emissions on operational costs for the carrier.

The new feature will be available on the Volvo FH and Volvo FH Aero with 13-liter diesel engine and will be available to order from November 2025.
