Reducing CO2- and nitrogen emissions is more important than ever. The need for cleaner machines is therefore increasing. It is partly for this reason that BIA Netherlands chooses to have the Komatsu brand in its assortment. BIA Netherlands is part of the BIA Group, a pioneer in the distribution of machines for the construction industry and public works for more than a century.
"We have a range of various brands of high-quality machines for the infra, construction, demolition and recycling industries," says Arjen Uijtewaal, account manager for BIA Netherlands. "But Komatsu as a supplier is enormously progressive in the environmental field." Komatsu machines are renowned worldwide for their power, reliability, longevity, economy, comfort and safety. The machines distinguish themselves not only in terms of technological development, but Komatsu looks at environmentally damaging factors in production and use of the machines. For example, Komatsu does not use a heavy-metal battery but an accumulator that works on the basis of direct current. This allows the machine to be recycled at the end of its life without being environmentally harmful.
In addition, Komatsu has been indicating the need to pay attention to nitrogen and CO since 1999.2-emissions. In 2003, they applied hybrid technology in their machine development, which led to the first commercial hybrid machines being sold in 2008. Says Uijtewaal, "Hybrid machines are less environmentally damaging; they reduce nitrogen and CO2-emissions. In addition, they are fast, super reliable and quiet, so they cause less disruption." But Uijtewaal adds that they are also good for the wallet: "A higher efficiency is achieved because the fuel consumption is about 20-25% lower, depending on the deployment of the machine. Meanwhile, we are already on the fourth generation of hybrid at BIA, with which you can say that it has proven to be a proven good concept by customers."
Hybrid cranes are also finding their way into demolition and recycling, pictured is the HB365LC-3 of Cees van Haaren of Boxtel.
Yet many entrepreneurs are still conservative when it comes to purchasing machines with modern technology, probably due to the unknown. "But precisely these technical developments, which are available and directly applicable in today's business, whereby the environment is taxed less and the return goes up... Well, how many arguments do you want to have? I would like to remove the thresholds and show through education what we can do for customers in that area." That ties in nicely with BIA's business philosophy: to offer the customer optimal solutions. Not only with machines, but also with professional project guidance, service and support. "Our BIA team guides the entire process, from financial support to fleet & process management," says Uijtewaal. "By supplying parts, providing maintenance and offering a 24/7 breakdown service, we deliver a solid total solution."
"For example, we have technological tools available to ensure that machines in the total production process can be monitored and supervised by the customer. Using fleet management, the customer registers the total fleet of various brands and thus gains insight into the productivity of the machines. In this way, optimal deployment can be created, minimizing downtime and keeping costs as low as possible." By setting timers for maintenance, the condition of machines is maintained, often saving repair costs, or machines can be replaced in a timely manner when they reach the end of their useful life. "Thanks to the combination of the complementary production range as well as the experienced after-sales support at BIA, we assure customers maximum productivity of their machines. At the lowest possible operational costs," Uijtewaal concludes.
