Albert Keijzer makes fleet sustainable with new Scania on bio-CNG

Recently, tank and bulk specialist Albert Keijzer took the next step in reducing its ecological footprint by investing in four new Scania tractors with the fuel-efficient 410 hp gas engine. The tractors will run on bio-CNG, thus contributing significantly to reducing CO2-emissions of both the company and its clients Cargill and Vollers. In this way, the logistics chain between the storage of cocoa beans at Vollers and processing at Cargill is arranged in a sustainable way.

For many years, Albert Keijzer has provided road transport for both companies. Vollers specializes in transport and storage of soft commodities and has developed a large and innovative warehouse in Westzaan. This facility is for the storage of cocoa beans for processing by Cargill in Zaandam. The three companies have joined forces to reduce CO2, particulate matter and nitrogen emissions throughout the chain.

Albert Keijzer had already been deploying Scania gas vehicles running on bio-CNG for their client Cosun Beet Company for some time. This valuable experience made the company decide to invest once again in new Scania gas-powered vehicles and use them to transport cocoa beans. This involves dozens of trips per week over a relatively short route so that refueling with bio-CNG can easily be included in the schedule. The Scania's are equipped with gas storage tanks for a total of 850 kg of CNG with a range of about 400 km. The cabs are richly equipped and feature every luxury, including ex-factory stand cooling. The vehicles are also covered by a full-service repair and maintenance contract.

Albert Keijzer has been 'Lean and Green' certified since 2010, and this focus on sustainability is driven by an organization-wide approach. Besides investing in biogas-powered vehicles, they also reduce emissions and noise by using electric loading and unloading systems in the tank and silo combinations. More and more trailers are equipped with an automatic tire pressure system. This not only reduces wear and tear and CO2-emissions, but also does not result in unplanned roadside stops in the event of a flat tire. Flat tires are kept inflated so that the driver can safely reach a repair facility. All roofs of its own premises are fitted with solar panels so that Albert Keijzer is almost entirely self-sufficient in energy.
