Maintenance-free and cost-saving
For the Port of Rotterdam Authority, it is essential that traffic flow be guaranteed throughout the entire life of the new Princess Alexia Viaduct. Therefore, the concept of an integral viaduct combined with jointless transitions by Strukton was chosen. The system is maintenance-free and designed to last a viaduct's lifetime.
Traditional joints and overlays often require maintenance, begins Niels Kuiltjes, senior project manager at Strukton. “With a jointless transition, this does not apply: no inspections, no replacements, no traffic disruption. That makes this solution extremely suitable for locations where maintenance and blockage is not desirable, such as here at the Maasvlakte.” Following the example of the Princess Amalia Viaduct, Strukton's jointless transitions are also part of the design of the Princess Alexia Viaduct.

Our product consists of a precisely constructed layer package, Kuiltjes explains. “First a steel plate is applied, followed by a waterproof membrane. Then follows the thermifalt with reinforcement, possibly supplemented by a third and fourth layer, depending on the situation. Intermediate layers provide protection and optimal force distribution, after which the whole is finished with the final top layer of your choice. This structure combines asphalt, strain-spreading layers and reinforcement, effectively accommodating temperature-sensitive movements such as shrinkage and expansion.”
In total, Strukton is realizing ten jointless crossings on the Princess Alexia Viaduct. “After that, all BAM has to do is apply the top layer,” says Kuiltjes. “The absence of visible steel parts means there is no noise pollution and driving comfort remains at a maximum. The solution is particularly suitable for integral viaducts, where low-frequency movements occur. We have also already successfully applied the concept to tunnel bodies, such as under the A2/N2 motorway. Thanks to its long service life, minimal maintenance and excellent durability, this joint fits seamlessly with the ambitions of modern operators such as the Port of Rotterdam Authority.”
