Size steel for recycled Gevlebrug

Custom steel for recycled Gevlebrug

After a thorough renovation, the distinctive Gevlebrug in the Houthaven in Amsterdam. The bridge with three new bridge decks forms the connection between the Pontsteiger and Karlskrona Island. The steel and all the cutting work for these three new bridge decks was supplied by De Boer Staal and De Boer Snijbedrijf.

Architectural bridge

Designed in 1930 by Amsterdam School architect Piet Kramer, the bridge served as the Oostereinde Hefbrug until 2000. After seventy years of active service and twenty years in storage, the old bridge has been dusted off and beautifully restored. The bridge is now in a new location in the Houthaven with a new name: the Gevlebrug. This name refers to the town of Gävle, just above Stockholm, an important historical supplier of Wood Harbour's timber.

Cutting steel: long and wide

After the restoration, the bridge was fitted with three new bridge decks: one driving deck 6 meters wide and 28 meters long and two pedestrian decks over 3 meters wide and 28 meters long. De Boer Snijbedrijf cut all the steel parts for the new bridge decks to size from steel S355 J2+N with 3.1 certification.

The steel, totaling 70 tons, was supplied by De Boer Staal and was blasted and cut in accordance with NEN-EN 1090 EXC2 by De Boer Snijbedrijf. Steel plates with a length of 14000 mm and a width of 3250 mm were used for the cutting work, so that welding could be kept to a minimum.

In early November, the new Gevlebrug was sailed across the IJ to Houthaven and expertly placed in its new location. The Gevlebrug is expected to open to motorized traffic in March 2020.

Here too, the motto of De Boer Staal and De Boer Snijbedrijf applies: 'YOU BUILD WE SUPPLY' also for civil engineering!
