Almere gets two innovative bridges on Floriade grounds

Bridge Campus Flevoland-Floriade, an initiative of the Province of Flevoland and the Municipality of Almere, and Reimert Bouw en Infrastructuur are starting the construction of two circular bridges on the Floriade site. Obtaining the environmental permits is the next important step towards the realization of the 'Beverbrug' and 'Rondje Weerwaterbrug'.

"We are proud that this important milestone has been achieved on time and that construction of both bridges is now in sight. The design is now being finalized, which is a matter of dotting the i's and according to the schedule, we will then start construction in July," said Reimert's project manager Dirk van Hoef.

Innovative bridges

After an innovative tendering process, Reimert was chosen last year as the winning party to build the two bridges. Decisive factors were the use of residual streams from Almere and the unique design of the bridges, designed by Almere architect René van Zuuk.

The bridges are largely made from material from waste streams in Almere. This gives the raw materials a second life, contributing to CO2 reduction and the circular economy. An additional advantage in this day and age is that we are not dependent on delays caused by the import of raw materials," said Van Hoef.

Bridge Campus Flevoland-Floriade is the practical environment for development and application of innovative and circular bridges. In the Netherlands, 40,000 bridges must be replaced in the coming years. In that context, innovation is taking place within the campus together with the market, education and science by, among other things: giving existing bridges and materials a 'second life', using sensoring for monitoring and optimizing design, cooperation and realization through a joint data platform.
