Climate-proof and cost-saving drainage

There are height differences, winding paths, playgrounds, seating areas and lots of nature. A think-aloud group of local residents and stakeholders collaborated with the municipality of Heumen on the redesign of the park, focusing on safety and the infiltration of rainwater.

Designing with a construction team

A construction team was set up for the redesign of the Kroonwijk Park, which included the Municipality of Heumen, Hevo - the specialist in sustainable housing - and Dolmans Landscaping Group. This construction team produced the implementation design. Afterwards, Dolmans Landscaping Group - a multidisciplinary green space company that recently also has a special branch for construction team-related civil works - would also take care of the design of the park and school grounds. Involving Dolmans Landscaping Group in the construction team meant that immediate consideration could be given to traffic circulation, environmental communication, cooperation with utility companies, accessibility during the work and concern for sustainability.

At the location where a school used to stand, the new school "De Vuurvogel" was situated. At the front of the school there was to be a play pit with playground equipment, which both school children and children from the neighborhood could use. There also had to be two bicycle racks. Because children are sometimes brought to school by car, there was a desire for a Kiss & Ride zone. From the K&R zone, children had to be able to walk safely to the school. "For the drainage of the K&R zone, we chose an ACO solution because we at Dolmans Landscaping Group do a lot of work for data centers. Then I often I contact ACO for line drainage systems. These are easy to work with, so we enjoy using the ACO solutions," said Gerard Haven, project manager at Dolmans Landscaping Group.

The relatively slim grating channel Multiline HD-I Sealin was installed by Infrascoop.

Climate adaptive and circular drainage

Dolmans Landscaping Group involved RE-infra - a practical engineering firm with roots in the contracting industry and part of the Remmits Group - in the construction process. They worked out the civil engineering design for Dolmans Landscaping Group. "Because the Kiss & Ride had to be located on the roof of the parking basement, there was no drainage option for rainwater via the ground. In addition, the installation space for a drainage system was limited by the low installation height of no more than 50 cm. So we had a challenge!" said Bart Visser, business manager at RE-infra. "That's why Kees-Willem Kamp, sales engineer at ACO, was called in. He recommended the Multiline HD-I Sealin, a line drainage system with robust durable cast iron edge protection and cast iron grates. This line channel has a low installation height, no installation in concrete sheathing required, and an additional advantage is the Sealin system. The Sealin system between the mutual channel connections ensures the absolute water and sand tightness of the line channel system. The relatively slender Multiline HD-I Sealin lattice gutter was installed by Infrascoop - a GWW company operating in the region of Northeast Brabant (Land van Cuijk), Nijmegen and North Limburg - at the edge of the K&R, against the curb. Thanks to ACO's quick turnaround and good advice, a nice drainage solution emerged."

Easy to build in

"With the line channel from ACO, it was a fairly simple way of installation," says Alexander Ruijters, senior work planner at Infrascoop. "Due to the low installation height on the parking deck, we could not install a sand trap, but thanks to the bottom connection of the Multiline HD-I Sealin line channel, this was not necessary either. Because climate adaptation was a requirement, this flume does not drain into the sewer system, but the rainwater is drained into an infiltration sewer located outside the basement roof. The municipality of Heumen had this infiltration sewer left over from another project, so it could be used here in a circular fashion. The infiltration sewer infiltrates the collected rainwater into the park. The bicycle and pedestrian paths around the school were also constructed in such a way that the rainwater can infiltrate into the soil as much as possible. As a result, rainwater does not go to waste."

In the school zone, great attention was paid to the safety of the final product. Therefore, the ACO line gully was equipped with the unique "clean" grating, which is bicycle tire-friendly due to the lack of long slot openings.

Green-blue schoolyard

"The past few months have been hard work on the Kroonwijk Park by our multidisciplinary green space company Dolmans Landscaping Group," says Gerard Haven. "We were responsible for the complete landscaping of the outdoor area. That meant construction of a play pit with wooden play facilities, gardens around the school with play elements and opportunities for outdoor education, and landscaping the whole area with greenery. Together with Infrascoop, the large Kiss & Ride zone, bicycle and walking paths and the schoolyard were realized. Rainwater in the egg-shaped schoolyard is drained with K200 line gullies. This narrow line gully with a width of only 200mm was easy to incorporate into the expanded layer of keiform size paving bricks."
