The ground holds no secrets for us

TerraCarta was approached directly by the TriAX construction consortium for the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction. In such a busy urban area with complex infrastructure, absolute certainty had to be obtained about the location of cables and pipes. TerraCarta assisted the construction consortium with a wide range of techniques and an advisory role in choosing the right method.

Based on previous collaborations, the construction consortium was familiar with TerraCarta's expertise and decided to engage them on a single private tender. The reason? “We can provide the full spectrum of cable and pipeline surveys for clients,” says project manager Arnout Boer. Two years ago, the project was still in the design phase. There were many bottlenecks with cables and pipelines in this area. TerraCarta determined the scope for approximately fifty locations around the junction and the Schinkelbrug. “Based on the design points and data from KLIC, we made a suitable survey proposal for each location: from test trenches and ground radar surveys to targeted detection and tracing of pipes.”

At the Schinkel Bridge complex, TerraCarta examined all intersecting cables and pipes under the Schinkel in several phases.

At the Schinkel Bridge, TerraCarta investigated all the cables and pipes crossing under the Schinkel in several phases. “This involved drilling, sheet pile replacements, and investigations in the waterway,” explains Boer. “Thanks to techniques such as jet lance surveys, gyroscopic measurements, and advanced radar and radio detection, we were able to determine their location accurately.” Cable and pipe surveys are not a side activity for TerraCarta, but its core business. “This project once again confirmed that KLIC information is not always sufficient. With our experience and techniques, we are able to effectively locate bottlenecks in the field.”

Working in Amsterdam, sometimes in the middle of the A10 South, naturally presented TerraCarta with a number of challenges: intensive preparation, complex traffic measures, and working during nighttime closures. “Thanks to our insights, risks to the project are minimized and implementation can proceed without any surprises in the field. And if, contrary to expectations, a potential bottleneck does arise, we are of course on standby to locate it,” Boer concludes.
