Sustainability in asphalt maintenance

Emulsion Asphalt Concrete (EAB). A cold-prepared and therefore energy- and CO2-saving mixture of minerals, bitumen emulsion (binder), cement, and water. These raw materials are produced in a mobile mixing and processing plant, mixed, and processed directly onto the asphalt surface of existing roads in a single operation. The major advantage is that the road surface can be used again after just 30 to 60 minutes. This means that the road only needs to be closed to traffic for a short period of time.

Rapid Asfalt, a specialist in the application of Emulsion Asphalt Concrete, has been focusing on the processing of this product on asphalt roads for over forty years, keeping Dutch roads in top condition. “The application possibilities are versatile, because EAB is suitable for all traffic intensities,” says Bert Boekholt, manager at Rapid Asfalt. “We apply different EAB systems, depending on the problems caused by aging and fraying of the road surface. Together with various clients, such as road authorities, contractors, and other companies, we apply the most suitable maintenance solution.”

Once Rapid Asfalt has resurfaced the road, it will last for at least another seven to ten years.

Microcoatings

EAB is used to apply, repair, or protect (preserve) surface layers, but also as lane fillers and for securing mesh track asphalt reinforcement. Boekholt explains: “This gives and maintains the desired skid resistance, texture, and flatness of the road surface. The addition of the signal color red allows road sections to be accentuated. Examples include red bicycle suggestion lanes, intersections, and bus lanes, which is an effective way to provide clarity in traffic.”

Favorable in terms of emissions and reduction of MKI with 40%

Rapid Asfalt has three computer-controlled EAB processing machines, including a cycle path machine for smaller jobs. “We use relatively few primary building materials,” says Boekholt. “After all, only a thin layer of 0.5 cm of EAB is applied. This results in a very favorable MKI. The system also has a preservative effect, extending the life of the road by 7 to 10 years. Once the road is worn out, the material is recyclable, just like regular asphalt.” This makes EAB a sustainable solution for road maintenance, and at an acceptable price.
