wemDeck® supplies 48 heavy traffic hatches for the quays of Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen

Amaliahaven Rotterdam, Groene Boog A16 in Rotterdam and Comol5 Rijnlandroute. These are all projects for which Wemdeck supplied heavy traffic hatches. The Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen seamlessly joins this list of appealing projects. In total, Wemdeck installed no less than 48 traffic hatches in various sizes for this project, equipped with checker plate and fall-back protection.

Much of the engineering surrounding the New Terneuzen Lock takes place underground. For example, all quays are equipped with entrances to areas below, so that cellars, pumps, hydraulics and other technical areas are easily accessible. The accesses must meet certain requirements: they must be safely accessible, heavy enough to support freight traffic and, very importantly, watertight.

Heavy truck traffic

"The hatches we have been asked to supply at the New Lock are of the wemDeck T1 type, heavy traffic hatches in class D400. It is especially important that the shutters are as inconspicuous as possible, that trucks can drive over them, that they function faultlessly and are certified," explains Richard of Wemeco Products. "Moreover, they are 100% waterproof thanks to a special gutter for rainwater drainage." The design and execution of the 48 hatches is custom-made. "The basis is a wemDeck design which we adapt according to the client's wishes. For the New Lock Terneuzen, for example, we had a special coating applied that meets the strict requirements from the client. Normally we manufacture and assemble the hatches in our factory in Poland. This time we had the special coating applied by a specialist in the Netherlands so we also had to assemble the hatches in the Netherlands. That was a technical challenge for us, but went completely satisfactorily."

Large format

The dimensions of the shutters are also anything but standard. The day size of the hatches varies from 80 by 80 centimeters to a day size of 3 by 2 meters. "The large hatches are such that, for example, a Hydraulic Power Unit also fits through them," Richard explains. "Furthermore, the hatches are equipped with an anti-slip checker plate and fall-back protection that can be unlocked in the open position without having to bend over. The fall-back protection prevents the lid from closing unexpectedly."

New: shutters for offices, schools and commercial buildings

It is not for nothing that Wemeco Products supplied these heavy-duty traffic shutters. The company specializes in designing and manufacturing innovative, safe and beautiful (construction) products. Under the brand name wemDeck we design, manufacture and assemble access hatches, floor hatches, inspection hatches, (heavy) traffic hatches, wall hatches, safety grilles and pit ladders in steel, aluminum and stainless steel. The products are mostly delivered complete and ready-to-use from our own factory. It also provides installation, inspection, repairs and application of (anti-slip) coating. New are the hatches for utility construction that wemDeck has been supplying since this year. These include roof hatches and floor hatches for offices, schools, garages, stores and sports buildings, among others. These comply with the applicable building requirements and standards.
