The RijnlandRoute is a new road link between Katwijk and the A4 near Leiden (via the A44).
The road solves current bottlenecks and guarantees traffic flow in the Holland-Rijnland region, especially around Leiden and Katwijk. Haitsma Beton is involved in no less than six structures of the first project section of the RijnlandRoute.
The first project section of the RijnlandRoute not only consists of a new connection between the A44 and A4, southwest of Leiden. It also involves widening the A44 between Leiden-West and the new Ommedijk interchange, where the new N434 connects to the A44. The A4 will also be widened and there will be an interchange connecting to the N434. The extensive part of the project is being carried out by the international contractor combination COMOL5 (TBI companies Mobilis and Croonwolter&dros, VINCI Construction Grands Projets and DEME Infra Marine Contractors).
Due to the large-scale modification of the infrastructure and the presence of many waterways and intersecting roads, about 20 new engineering structures are needed. Haitsma Beton is involved in four structures that are part of the widening of the A44 between Leiden-West and the Ommedijk interchange. Prefabricated girders were also supplied for two engineering structures alongside the A4.
A special structure (KW10) is the widening of the Oude Rijn Bridge near the A44. Both towards The Hague and Amsterdam, the A44 will be widened from 2×2 to 2×4 lanes. As a result of the widening of the A44, there will be a new bridge on the west side of the existing bridge over the Oude Rijn. The existing and new bridges will be fixed bridges. Haitsma Beton assembled 153 precast rail girders and 34 precast box girders for the bridge.
In late April/early May this year, 32 box girders for the west side of structure 9 were assembled. KW 9 is a new viaduct at the Leiden-West junction (Plesmanlaan N206/A44). The prefabricated girders range in length from 27 to 34 meters and weigh between 60,000 and 75,000 kilograms each.
Meanwhile, all girders for the west sides of structures 7, 9 and 11 have been assembled. Assembly for the east side is scheduled for the first half of 2021.
