Tilting weirs and overflow pits from Kesteren

With the program Optimalization water supply Peel canals, more water is introduced into the dry sandy soils of the Peel region. To distribute this increased capacity from the main canals to the hinterland in a manageable way, quite a few engineering structures have been adapted and renewed. HC Waterbeheersing from Kesteren was responsible for the development and production of ten new tipping weirs and two overflow locations.

In May 2022 we were approached by main contractor Vissers Ploegmakers to make a quotation for the delivery of the twelve objects based on the demand specification that was there at the time, begins Harry Gerritsen of HC Waterbeheersing. "We then invited them to Kesteren to come and see how we as a dam builder approach such a process. We are an open book in that respect. After assignment, we started analyzing the locations and the drawing work started. We assume a certain standard and quality, are very involved and want to know all the ins and outs. Not infrequently we hear back 'Gee, you're asking a lot'. But it is precisely in the preparation that you earn the most."

Infinitely adjustable

For this project, HC Water Control produced ten tilt weirs and two overflow pits. "All custom-made and of high quality," assures Harry. "The level difference in the objects is infinitely adjustable. At the overturning weirs, this is done by means of an automated penstock, at the overflow locations with an overflow slide in the sump. Incidentally, the sump is located on the high water side and is connected to two pipes of around 500 mm that introduce the water into the lower area. For the design and capacity of these objects we base ourselves on the minimum and maximum level, as set by the water board. The design is obviously done in close consultation, where we also contribute our expertise as an experienced dam builder. Based on all the information we make the final drawings and calculations. After the client's approval, we convert these into production drawings and start production."

The tilt weirs in this project are all but one automated.

HC Waterbeheersing produces the objects entirely in-house in Kesteren. "A tilt weir, for example, is made from stainless steel plate material that we transform into a complete product," Harry continues. "We have our own milling machine, press brake, plasma cutter and certified welders and use only the quality of stainless steel 316. The overturning weirs in this project are all but one automated." By now, all of the weirs have been delivered and installed. "We usually also take care of the assembly, but in this case it was carried out by Vissers Ploegmakers itself." Harry looks back on a successful project. "Thanks to good preparation and pleasant cooperation with both the contractor and the water board, we delivered the tipping weirs and overflow pits neatly on schedule."
