Construction consortium new-south may proceed with renovation of Amsterdam South station

Construction consortium new-south (mobilis, boskalis and van gelder) received an official agreement Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, for the next phase of the renovation of Amsterdam South Station. This involves the widening and raising of the current station passage (the minervapassage) and modification of the train platforms.

On August 26, 2021, the parties involved signed the first phase of the contract, namely the construction of the second station passage: the brittenpassage. Construction combination new-south is currently fully engaged in the construction, to the satisfaction of client zuidasdok.

Start in 2026

Construction of the next phase of the station renovation will begin in 2026. The official agreement is important so that design and preparation can begin now. This phase of the station renovation will also have an impact on train, subway and road traffic and requires timely coordination with all carriers and operators involved.

Remodeling minervapassage

The current station arcade, the Miner Passage, will be widened (40 meters wide between stores), much higher and will have more space for station facilities. An underground bicycle storage facility will also be built in this phase and the platforms for the trains will be further widened and roofed.

In order not to interfere with the functioning of the station during the renovation, prior to the work, the train platforms will be temporarily extended above Parnassus Road. When the work is complete, these platform extensions will be removed again. The renewed minervapassage will remain the main entrance to Amsterdam Zuid station and will continue to function as the connecting route between zuidplein and gustav mahlerplein.

Olympic achievement

Erik van weesep, project director bouwcombinatie nieuw-zuid: we are very pleased with this follow-up order. The intensive cooperation with Zuidasdok can now be continued efficiently. The experience we have gained can be incorporated into the preparations for the new phase in good time, so that disruption can be properly managed and the organization can be set up in time for the implementation. This second phase will be another Olympic achievement in this challenging environment".
