The solution for surveying work

Are you already using Trimble Connect? Too often the answer is still "no. Sander van Amersvoort, one of the two owners of Siegers Land Surveying, is surprised by this. They have been gratefully using this online platform that improves collaboration between the field and office for more than four years. He explains why.

Optimizing the work process

Sander started his career at Siegers Land Surveying in mid-2018 and became co-owner in 2020. In the year before, he focused his arrows on optimizing the work process. According to Sander, the purchase of the Trimble TSC7 was an important link: "With this field book, we were able to improve both the job satisfaction and the turnaround time of our work. Among other things, it is a lot more graphic, has a larger screen and it offers the possibility of loading all kinds of substrates." To take full advantage of this field book, Sander also dove into the capabilities offered by Trimble Connect.

Trimble Connect has two versions: Workflow and Business.

Trimble Connect Workflow

Sander describes Trimble Connect as a line that connects the Trimble Access software with Trimble Sync Manager and Trimble Business Center. It is an integration of systems that makes work more streamlined. The connection is made through a digital cloud: Trimble Connect. There, projects are stored and ingested data uploaded directly from the field. The data can then be downloaded from here and exported directly to Trimble Business Center if necessary.

Save time

Working with Trimble Connect saves time. Where previously a field worker had to go to the office for the necessary project communication and data exchange, he or she can now get it done with a field book in hand. Based on Trimble Connect, the field worker can open the projects on site, perform the work, and at the end of the run, with a simple push of a button, upload the data. The employee in the office can immediately work with the data. Surveyors on the same project can also easily exchange data online. Without meeting physically, they can, for example, check the progress of a project or take foundation points from each other. This is advantageous according to Sander: "Land surveying is a profession in which you are somewhere else every day in this beautiful country. By connecting with each other online, we are saving surveyors a lot of travel. With today's heavy traffic, that is of course very beneficial."

Data instantly secure

Applying Trimble Connect makes working with a USB stick unnecessary. The data is now uploaded directly to the online platform. Besides saving time, the big advantage is that the data is immediately secure. At Siegers Land Survey you therefore see very few USB sticks, although there are exceptions according to Sander: "We do opt for a USB stick when we scan. We collect so much data then and uploading it can be challenging." 

Increasing flexibility

An advantage that also makes Sander happy is that this way of working allows for flexibility. Emergency jobs can thus be completed more easily between jobs. Sander managed to complete an urgent job within an hour: "This job was on the route of a surveyor. I then quickly set up this project and the surveyor was able to visit the site immediately. Within no time I had the data and was able to deliver the drawing to the client. This job was on the other side of the country and we could never have done it so quickly otherwise."

Working with Trimble Connect makes it possible to load digital substrates on site. As a result, a surveyor does not have to look up the boundaries himself with a map in his hand. Sander says this reduces the chance of miscommunication and discussion: "Both the person in the office and the surveyor in the field have exactly the same starting point: the digital subsurface."

Workflow of Business

Trimble Connect has two versions: Workflow and Business. Trimble Connect Workflow is the entry-level model. It allows you to create one project with up to five participants, and the storage capacity is up to 10 GB. Sander soon decided he needed more space. Siegers Land Surveying had the account upgraded to Trimble Connect Business. Through this version, they assign seven seats to seven individual Trimble Connect accounts. In the role of licensee, Sander can create projects for all these individual accounts. For this, they pay less than 100 euros per month.

How do you get started with Trimble Connect?

Because Siegers Surveying uses Trimble Access (at least version 2018), Trimble Connect is free. No Trimble Access? It can also be paired with Trimble software packages: Trimble Business Center, TerraFlex, Penmap for Android, SiteVision and SketchUp. To get this up and running, send an implementation request to Geometius' support department. There they make one person within the relevant organization administrator who can link licenses and roles to fieldbooks within the organization so you can get started immediately on improving your work processes.
