Mobilis will build bridges at Beach Island and Center Island

Mobilis B.V. will build the bridges Annemie Wolffbrug and Lee Millerbrug on IJburg. Gemeente Amsterdam and Mobilis B.V. recently signed the tender agreement for the realization of the two bridges. Mobilis scored best on a combination of tender amount, risk management and sustainability.

"Mobilis is no stranger to the Amsterdam area," says Remco Hoeboer, Mobilis director. "We are proud of this beautiful cooperation and look forward to the construction of two bridges where we integrate nature and greenery into the building structure."

The two bridges connect Haveneiland, Centrumeiland and Strandeiland. The bridges are particularly important for Centrumeiland, Strandeiland and Buiteneiland. They provide good accessibility and a safe and smooth flow of car, bicycle, pedestrian, bus and streetcar.

"Both bridges are part of the 'Island Bridges' family. For the new bridges, extra attention was paid to nature-inclusive construction (integrating nature and greenery into the building structure) and careful detailing. For example, the bridges will have special nesting facilities for bats and birds. The connecting pavilions and parking entrance behind the Lee Miller Bridge on Beach Island are also part of the assignment. We are delighted to contribute in this way to the future community and environment on IJburg," said Jorrin ten Have of Grimshaw Architects.

The pavilions are spaces that can be used for water and beach activities. For example, there can be a restaurant or a water sports club. So the bridge not only provides a good connection, but also gives IJburg residents the opportunity to meet each other.

The City of Amsterdam created the design and contract. This involved collaboration with engineering firms, including Sweco and Grimshaw Architects. "I am happy with the current result, proud of the entire team that worked on this and look forward to the end result: gracefully designed bridges that will definitively connect the new islands and beautiful pavilions that will mark the entrance to Strandeiland" said Frits Groot, project manager from the City of Amsterdam's Engineering Office.

Planning

Implementation preparations will begin in the second quarter of 2023. According to the current schedule, the bridges and pavilions can be put into use in 2026. The extended IJtram (line 26) is expected to be able to cross the bridges as early as Christmas 2025. The streetcar will run to Strandeiland with a stop at Centrumeiland. For current and new residents of Centrumeiland and Strandeiland, this means a direct connection to Central Station.
