Big(ish) in earthmoving, that's how we can describe Jimmink Kolhorn. For many decades the family business has been building on the road. Literally and figuratively. During the redesign of the A.C. de Graafweg (N241) they took over the entire large earthmoving project from Boskalis. A secure task, often at weekends and at night.
Already since September 2021, Jimmink Kolhorn has been active on and around the A.C. de Graafweg. "Well before Boskalis started outside with the execution, we already placed some culvert pipes on a directional basis and moved and excavated the somewhat more complex waterways," begins Stefan Jimmink, already the fourth generation within the family business. "From March this year, we started the contracting that will take just under three years for us. We are basically on the job permanently with two crawler excavators, but with regular peaks of five or six crawlers. And the same goes for the deployment of our tippers."
Jimmink Kolhorn's scope includes excavating the new waterways along the road, removing the old foundations and incorporating them into the new foundation, applying the preload, sand and stone grit. "And all this in phases over the entire 12-kilometer stretch," says Stefan. "Of course, our machines are equipped with GPS, so that allows us to work very efficiently. We also use large means of transport, such as tractors with 20 m3 tippers and various types of caterpillars with long and standard boom, to move a lot of soil in a short time. But the most important thing is our contractor mentality, which really makes a difference. Standing still is not an option, we make sure that we use our precious time on the project very effectively. Even on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays, and even at night."
Jimmink Kolhorn is a true family business. "We are originally a contracting company founded in 1943, but have expanded our expertise over the years. So we are still active in the agricultural sector, but also strong in large earthmoving, drainage and cultural engineering," Stefan says with appropriate pride. "Thanks also to our 32 loyal colleagues who are all cut from the same cloth and know what work is." The employees at Jimmink Kolhorn have access to huge (and diverse) machinery ranging from 10 large crawler excavators and a series of smaller "diggers" to 15 tractors, 10 dumpers and many other resources such as a bulldozer, drainage equipment, pumps, harvesters, combines and plows to subdivide land. "Especially in recent years we have invested heavily in new machines with Stage IV and V engines. There too we make a difference, just as we do on the A.C. de Graafweg. Our colleagues enjoy the project very much and are very driven to make something beautiful out of it together."
