Cast iron piping systems: circular for 6,000 years

Ductile iron piping systems offer a sustainable solution for drinking water, wastewater and water transport in industrial applications. Under the guise of "pipeline solutions for the future," Saint-Gobain PAM aspires to a leading position in the circular economy. At least the basic material will not be lacking. Iron has been used and recycled for 6,000 years.

Saint-Gobain PAM supplies not only pipes in diameters from around 60 to 2000mm, but, if required, a complete piping system.

Saint-Gobain PAM is a world market leader in the production of ductile iron piping systems. "We are a reliable partner for both standard as well as innovative solutions in circular piping systems," says Esther Lindeman, Managing Director of Saint-Gobain PAM Netherlands, active on the Dutch market since 1918 (!). "We supply not only the pipes in diameters from around 60 to 2000mm, but if required the complete system. A total solution that lasts at least a hundred years and is infinitely (locally) recyclable. Our systems are demonstrably sustainable and naturally have an EPD."

Tough conditions

In addition to being extremely durable, a ductile iron piping system also proves its added value under harsh conditions. Lindeman: "The environment is constantly changing, not to mention the impact of climate change. Our piping systems are characterized by high ring stiffness and are therefore resistant to changes in the subsurface as a result of heavy rainfall or an earthquake, for example. Even high traffic loads pose no problem, and since ductile iron is not permeable, unlike some plastics, they thrive in contaminated soil. No matter what happens in the environment, a ductile iron piping system can perform its function for a hundred years maintenance-free in the subsurface." A ductile iron piping system also lends itself well to specific applications, such as horizontal directional drilling. "If space is so limited where the pipeline cannot be fully laid and squeezed, ductile iron offers an alternative. This is because the pipe can be assembled while retracting."

For each application, Saint-Gobain PAM Netherlands provides appropriate advice. "We discuss the most efficient laying solution in terms of practicality to minimize material and cutting losses. Transport is also arranged as efficiently as possible with the least amount of CO2-emissions. In short, a ductile iron piping system is rightfully a sustainable choice. It has a lasting residual value and is endlessly recyclable locally."
